Iceland Log Day 13

Thursday, August 4th
Morning was very cold and windy, and improved throughout day.

Morning hot tub time.
Depart Blue View Cabin.
Explore Gullfoss. Beautiful!
Explore Geysir in Haukadalur Valley.
Visit Þingvellir National Park (part 1 and part 2): Öxarárfoss, Langistígur, and Lögberg.
Dinner at Restaurant Mika. The Hot Chocolate (really, Drinking Chocolate) was amazing!
Return to Blue View Cabin for relaxing evening.
Second session in hot tub. Great!

Iceland Log Day 12

Wednesday, August 3rd
Sunny & Windy

Checkout of The Garage. Final visit with the horses and dogs. We enjoyed our time here.
Take Herjólfur Ferry to Westman Islands.
Delicious breakfast pastries and coffee at Vigtun Bakhús.
Shoping at 66° North store.
Take hiking trail to museum Eldheimar Museum.
Explore Eldheimar Museum. Very engaging recounting of eruption in 1973 on the island.
Walk back to harbor.
Return to Vigtor Bakhús to get tomorrows breakfast
3p ATV tour pushed to 3:45
ATV Tour with Volcano ATV. Very fun time!
Some more shoping: Icewear, Póley, and Penninn.
Good dinner at Gott.
7:30p Ferry back to mainland.
Drive to Blue View Cabins to check-in.

Team Update: On Day 9 while descending the Vatnajökull Glacier I (Jamie) got tripped up a bit in my crampons. I placed my right foot down and caught the crampon on my left foot. I stumbled, and took a few big steps but didn’t fall. Everything seemed okay at the time, but my right knee has been hurting me since. I’ve been hoping it would get better but so far it isn’t. Due to my knee issues we have changed our plans for tomorrow. We were planning to go to Landmannalaugar and hike a bit. Since my knee isn’t doing so well, we are going to instead do the Golden Circle tomorrow. Landmannalaugar will have to wait for another time. I’m sure my knee will be fine with some rest.

Iceland Log Day 11

Tuesday, August 2nd
Great overall weather. Sunny. A few sprinkles.

Up early for 8:30a departure with Into the Wild to go on Super Jeep tour of Þórsmörk (Thorsmork) including: Eyjafjallajökull Volcano, Stakkholtsgjá Canyon Hike, Lunch at Thorsmork. We then transitioned to ATV’s for some fun riding and a stop for Gljúfrafoss Hike. Final stop at the very popular Seljalandsfoss waterfall before returning to The Garage.
Wonderful late afternoon hot tub time under the waterfall at The Garage. This place is great to stay at.
Return visit to Black Crust Pizzeria. We went there yesterday, and the place was too busy, dinner was rushed, and seating wasn’t great. Tammy felt strongly there was a better experience to be had so we went an hour earlier and had a delightful dinner.
Visit Reynisfjara Black Sand Beach and the kids had a great time playing on the beach, climbing on columnar geology, exploring the giant cave.
Mazie insisted that we stop at this cave just a bit down the road from The Garage on the way back. She read the sign and discovered it was Steinahellir Cave. It had a varied history, including some superstitions. Mazie insisted that we all get out and go through the door and see it. But then she got super scared about the stories of bad luck and insisted none of us go in and then we had to let Steinahellir Cave know that we were good people. 🤞

Monday, August 1st
Very nice and sunny, with high winds in parts.

Visited Skogafoss. Majestic waterfall.
Did one-half (2.5 miles) of Waterfall Way hike from Skogafoss to Cascading Falls. 5 miles round trip. Next time we’ll do it all.
Visit Skogar Museum to see the turf houses and visit the cafe.
Walk to Kvernufoss from Skogar Museum.
Return to The Garage to relax.
Pizza at Black Crust Pizzeria in Vik.
Go to the Icelandic Lava Show!

Sunday, July 31st
Pleasant weather.

Checked out Fosshotel Glacier Lagoon
Five hour glacier hike on Vatnajökull Glacier with Troll Expeditions.
Gas station for refuel and lunch snacks.
Quick visit to Fjaðrárgljúfur Canyon. Did not go all the way up. We were short on time and Jamie’s legs were spent.
Dinner at Smiðjan Brugghús in Vík
Get groceries at KR in Vik.
Drive to The Garage to check-in. This place is amazing!

Saturday, July 30th
Freaking cold and windy until 2p then really nice after that.

Checked out of Fosshotel Vatnajökull.
Drive to Jökulsárlón glacial lagoon.
1:10p Zodiac Tour was cancelled due to wind. Rebooked on 3:20p.
Explored the Diamond Beach and played with ice pushed back onto the beach.
Delicious lunch at Nailed It Fish & Chips. Really, really good!
Zodiac Tour which was amazing!
Check in to Foss Hotel Glacier Lagoon.
Very nice dinner at Foss Hotel Restaurant.
Hike up to Svartifoss Waterfall.
Outdoor hot tub at hotel.

Friday, July 29th
Cool and Rain starting in afternoon.

Start at Skarðás Country Cabins in Egilsstadir.
Breakfast pastries at Fellabakarí.
Visit Seyðisfjörður to see shops and town.
Return to Ring Road and drive to Höfn along the ocean.
Stop at Djúpivogur to get a Coke and the kids jumping time on Jumping Pillow.
Early dinner at Íshúsið Pizzeria in Höfn.
Check in at Fosshotel Vatnajökull.

Iceland Log Day 6

Thursday, July 28th
Windy but Mostly Sunny

Breakfast at Fosshotel Mývatn.
Drive to Borgarfjörður Eystri.
Stop at Rjúkandafoss to stretch our legs and walk a bit and found out it was the 12th tallest waterfall in Iceland.
Epic hike to Stórurð from Njarðvík Trail Head (65° 33.05 -13° 58.24).
Arrive in Borgarfjörður Eystri.
Fabulous dinner at Frystiklefinn in Blábjörg Guesthouse.
Visit the Puffins at Hafnarhólmi.
Drive to Skarðás Country Cabins in Egilsstadir for the night.
