Did you get a POAP claim code and now wondering what to do? Here are simple step-by-step instructions to claim your first Proof of Attendance Protocol (POAP) token.

Step 1: You need an Ethereum Wallet

If you already have an Ethereum wallet, get your wallet address and move to Step 2.

If you are new to Ethereum the easiest-to-use and most fun wallet is Rainbow. It is available for iOS and Android devices and has a very simple process to get you started. Go download it and setup your wallet.

If you would like other options, I suggest using MetaMask. It is made by the Ethereum foundation and on all major platforms. However, it isn’t as user friendly as Rainbow.

If neither of those work for you, a quick search for Ethereum wallet should find multiple options for your device preference. You cannot use an exchange address, such as Coinbase. These cannot manage NFTs.

Once you have installed a wallet and completed the setup process you will have a wallet address. They look like big chunks of numbers. Copy it. Don’t attempt to write it down. Your address will start with “0x” followed by 40 hex numbers.

Step 2: Mint your token

Now that you have an address, the rest is easy. Make sure you have your address copied to your clipboard and go to the claim URL in this email.

That page will ask you for your address. Paste that into the web page and press “Mint”.

Once you’ve claimed your token, you’re done!

Step 3: Verify you have the token

If you are using Rainbow you will be able to see your POAP token directly in your wallet. It will show up in minutes.

Alternatively, to verify you have the claimed token, go to the POAP scanner and input your address – it will show you all your POAP tokens. This is public so you can see anyone’s wallet. Check out my POAP collection if you are curious.

You may also want to install the POAP mobile app. Configure it with your address and you can have your POAP collection on your phone.

FAQ

I don’t see the POAP token in my Ethereum wallet, why?

This gets a bit complicated. To keep POAPs free they are minted on the Gnosis Blockchain. Gnosis is very power efficient and has extremely low costs. If you want it in your Ethereum wallet you can migrate the POAP token to Ethereum for a small gas fee. But, there is no need to do that. Gnosis is connected to Ethereum and is fine to keep your token for as long as you want.

I hear crypto is bad for the environment?

POAP runs on the Gnosis blockchain which is a proof-of-stake chain that uses an extremely small amount of energy. It also has fees that are fractions of a cent, and uses the Dai stablecoin as the native currency. There is no profit hedge to trading Dai, and the environmental footprint is very small.
