2014

    Good morning from Grand Marais.

Red sun setting behind a forested hillside over calm water, with its reflection shimmering on the surface below.

    WikiApiary Stickers

StickerMule had a great deal a couple of weeks ago so I had these fun WikiApiary clear vinyl stickers made. They really came out great!

If you want one for your laptop or whatever send me a note and I’ll put one in the mail.

Dozens of small cartoon bumblebee stickers scattered across a sunflower-patterned background with yellow petals and brown centers.

    DevOpsDays MSP 2014

    • DevOpsDays MSP day 2 getting started with Jeff Sussna!
Conference session in a tiered auditorium with a presenter at a podium and a projected yellow slide reading Protip: promises aren't always kept.
    • Thank you DevOpsDays MSP for opportunity to sponsor a great event!
    • The primary objective of development teams is to create new services and applications.
    • The primary objective of tech operations is to insure 24x7 operations, which all change threatens.
    • Any tech organization that doesn’t acknowledge, embrace and empathize around these two facts has a broken culture.
    • Agree with this @beerops.
Presenter stands at a podium in a tiered lecture hall showing a slide titled Doing It Wrong with three silos labeled DEV, DevOps, and OPS.
    • There are places where developers are not on call? Technology is on the hook, not just one part.
    • Yikes. That’s a lot of red.
Presenter stands at a podium in a tiered lecture hall as attendees with laptops watch a projected screen showing a data table with many red rows.
    • “There is no root cause.” - Ian Malpass
    • “Root cause” dismisses the inherit complexity in large systems.
    • I prefer the term “incident report” over “root cause analysis” because oftentimes there is no root cause.

Gorgeous day for US National Kubb Championship!

Outdoor kubb tournament on a green field with crowds of players, coolers, and a Planet Kubb banner flag under overcast skies.

Time for the Live Auction at the #TeamSPS Charity Auction!

Crowded conference room during a live charity auction with a presenter at the front and a bowfishing excursion slide projected on screen.

Charley Hackerson and I just won whirlyball event at #TeamSPS auction. The sales v. tech team event is on!

Great to see #TeamSPS doing good at tonight’s charity auction!

Large indoor charity auction with long tables displaying toys and games while dozens of attendees browse and mingle in background.

    Mayday Did It!

I’m very happy to be one of the over fifty-thousand backers of Mayday PAC.

Collage of dozens of selfie photos of supporters holding signs reading I am the MaydayPAC with bold celebratory text overlay announcing 50000 backers reached $5M on July 4th.

    Exploring Green Line

We decided to take the new MetroTransit Green Line from downtown Minneapolis to the end-of-the-line in St. Paul this weekend.

Young girl in a yellow shirt sitting on a Metro Transit light rail train seat, smiling and glancing sideways. Outdoor farmers market stall with bunches of Swiss chard, basil, and radishes on a table; shoppers browse in the background. Two children standing on a MetroTransit Green Line platform next to a blue and yellow light rail train in St. Paul. Girl in yellow shirt laughing at an outdoor farmers market while a toddler in gray shirt stands nearby watching vendors sell produce. Wall mural with math formulas etched in brown concrete and two white geometric string-art rosette sculptures mounted on it.

    2014 TdF Begun

Enjoying stage 2 with my viewing station all setup. Mini Jambox is critical addition.

(I wish I could watch the World Cup this easily without a cable subscription!)

Tablet propped on a kitchen counter streaming a cycling race peloton, with a teal Jawbone Mini Jambox speaker balanced on top and charging cables nearby.

Eyeing SaltStack to keep my Linode machines humming.
