We had a great hike on the Oberg Mountain Loop. This is Tammy’s sister’s favorite fall hike and it was our first time doing it. I can see why it is so highly recommended. Sadly the Maple’s had nearly all lost their leaves but the Birch were still doing their thing. Highly recommended!

The Singing Sakatah Hills State Trail is closed right by Highway 60 and Dalton Ave near Cannon Lake. They have a section fenced off where the trail edge has collapsed. The record rains must have been too much for this area. Couple of trees down too.

I made it out to the pontoon to get the cover back up, replace a cover pole, and get the ponding water off the cover. Mission successful. There is still a bit over a foot of water above the dock. The boat still is floating and not on the Sea Legs yet.

We stopped at our cabin yesterday to check on the flooding on Cannon Lake. Lucky for us the only real situation we are managing is our pontoon and dock. The water was down a few inches from last week but still very high. The lake association also sent a warning that the water may be contaminated due to all the flooding upriver from us.

\n

I also replaced the sump pump discharge line. Usually the sump pump there doesn’t run often but it is running every minute to two now and I noticed the discharge line had several holes and it was spraying water all over the place. I figured with all the flooding I may not be able to find a replacement but Faribault Ace Hardware had our back. Our sump pump didn’t have a threaded connector but I was able to make it work and got the new line in place.

We drove along Cannon Lake Trail and the water had receded a few inches but still a lot of flooding and even more debris after a week. We also looped through Dodge Court and most of the really big houses there were still okay but there were a few that were badly flooded. In Warsaw I was surprised that bridge that crosses the Cannon River on Farwell Ave was still open. I thought it ould be flooded too. The Channel Inn was not flooded, but Doc’s Dock was flooded and several of their permanent RV spots were as well.

In September 2016 we experienced a major flood on Cannon Lake, and now in 2024 we are going through an even more severe flood. I’m going to use the completely unscientific gauge of the seating at the end of our dock. In 2016 the water was right up to the seat. This year, only about 3 inches of the upper part of the seats is popping above the water.

\n

I wasn’t sure how bad the flooding would be this year. I have cameras mostly for keeping track of weather and storms and things were generally looking okay. Tammy went to the lake on Thursday to check on things and reported the lake was a couple inches below the top of the dock. Given there wasn’t much rain in the forecast I sort of thought it would be okay.

\n

Then today the lake association sent an email that there were sandbags available at the Channel Inn for homeowners that needed them, and the lake was probably going to rise another foot. I got into the car immediately and went drove there.

\n

As I got to Faribault I started to see how bad the flooding was. There was a road on the periphery of Faribault that was flooded and impassable. As I drove toward Cannon Lake I saw that the water was up very high. Shager Beach wasn’t there at all, entirely under water. The public docks along the south side of the lake were all badly damaged. As I got closer to our place I saw that some of the houses had as much as 100’ of lakeshore underwater.

The good news for us is our place is on a bit of a rise. We are at least 20 feet higher than many other places. Happily our basement is still dry. The biggest issue is the pontoon, which was why I was there. Unfortunately the sumac trees along our shore have gone nuts and the camera I can usually watch the boat from showed nothing of value.

When I got there I could see right away we had some problems.

What to do? I had to think on it a bit. There is no chance of getting the pontoon out from under the canopy. I didn’t like the look of the back of the pontoon. It was much lower and the back of the canopy was visibly higher in the air. I don’t want the motor sinking. After some consideration I switched into swimming shorts, put on a life jacket, and got a single aluminum paddle. I wasn’t going to repeat walking off the dock like I did in 2016, so I use the paddle and very carefully made my way step my step down the stairs and along the dock. I was about waist high in the water.

\n

Once I got to the boat I lowered the ladder and used that to climb into it. The boat was pretty high up to get into otherwise. My goal was to make the boat as short as possible. The bimini was on its lowest setting, but I could drop it all the way down and get another foot. This was not easy. The boat was holding the canopy up and there was a lot of weight. I gave it a lot of muscle and finally lifted the canopy off enough to get the bimini down all the way.

\n

Then I crawled into the boat and noticed that one of the cover poles was bent into a C-shape. I knocked out all of the poles to again lower the profile of the boat. After doing this, I could tell the boat was floating a little bit. It wasn’t pinned in place anymore. I then carefully grabbed a tie down and went back down the ladder. I loosely tied the boat to the canopy support. It cannot go anywhere, it is totally trapped. But when the water lowers the rope could be useful.

\n

I don’t think there is anything else I can do. I definitely bought myself some room. I think the lake could raise another 6" or 12" and it would probably be okay. We’ll see. 🤞

After I took care of this, I repositioned the lake camera and put a new access point in place outside to make this work. Now I have full eyes on the boat and know what is going on. 👀

After tending to my situation I looked around a bit and took some photos. I’ve got it pretty easy. Some folks have their entire houses flooded. It was sad to see.

It didn’t occurr to me that Ireland was going to have much longer days. We are used to Minnesota at 45 °N. Ireland is at 53 °N with over an hour of additional light. Still a far cry from Iceland at 62 °N and yet 5 more hours of light, but super noticeable with light well past 10 PM.

In the midst of a blizzard Jamie decided that it would be a good idea to take the older kids that had just finished sledding for an hour to town 11 miles away. After clearing the Mazda CX-9 of snow and getting it warmed up Jamie pulled out with Mazie, Nora, Tyler, Levi, and Elsa. The snow was deeper than Jamie expected but they made it up the driveway and turned right onto the dirt road. The road had no clear markings and with the blizzard the snow had blown over everything. There was only snow in front of us and not being able to see the road Jamie drove right off the crown of the road putting the passenger side wheels in the ditch. Mazie, Nora, and Jamie attempted to dig the wheels out and push but the Mazda simply slid further into the ditch. Hector came out to help and we proceeded to make no progress, simply sliding further into the ditch. Denny then came to the rescue with his pickup and tow strap. First attempt to pull the Mazda out actually pulled Denny’s truck into the ditch too and left him stuck. Luckily the crew was able to get the truck unstuck, and a 2nd attempt to pull the Mazda out was more successful. Denny pulled in the truck and Jamie managed the Mazda until we got all wheels back on the road. Finally, after nearly an hour, both cars returned and everyone rejoiced.

We visited the Ice Palace at Fountain Hills Winery and thought it was really cool. We had dinner there and were blown away by the Wood Fired Pizza. We all try to predict the future. Particularly in business, sports, finance, etc. I like to recall a story that Larry Kramer, CEO of MarketWatch, shared with me a long time ago.

Larry had spent a lot of time in finance, but before that had a deep background in sports. Sports betting is a huge industry and people try to prove that they have the edge in picking the winner of any game. So, anyone that can prove that they are a good picker will get attention, or be able to sell their upcoming predictions. Larry shared one of the strategies that he had seen many times.

  1. Take a large group of people, let’s say 10,000. Send half of them a message that Team A will win the game this weekend. Send the other have a message that Team B will win the game this weekend.

Today we “celebrate” the Winter Solstice. Here in Minneapolis the sun will rise at 7:48 am and set at 4:35 pm. We’ll get 527 minutes of daylight, the least we will get for the last and next few months.

Much is said about Minnesota’s cold and snowy winters and mostly I find those just fine if not great. Snow can be fun and so pretty. It can be a challenge to overcome as you drive and get about, but one we are sort of proud of. The cold is okay with the right gear. And both of them make for delightful winters inside and out, with a nice cup of hot cocoa and hopefully a fireplace to warm up inside. Maximum Hygge!

\n

But I’m not a fan of the dark. In a typical year I go to the office in the dark and leave in the dark. One upside of being at home with the pandemic is getting to experience more of the limited sunlight. I shouldn’t complain too much as I know there are many who suffer from seasonal affective disorder in this time of year. I only wish that we had more time to be outside.

\n

So I had a thought today of celebrating the Winter Solstice as a bigger deal. Try to turn that frown upside down of sorts and make an event of our shortest day. I’m starting by writing this, and will be getting the kids into it in some form. In the process we can also note the march of longer days to come!

Our driveway provides almost no opportunity for me to get snow out of the way. I blow a lot of it over the fence into the backyard, but also blow a lot of it against my neighbors garage. There is a limit to how high you can go though.

I’ve debated next fall creating a series of wood shelves to set next to the neighbors garage. I could then blow the snow vertically into the shelves and I could get it 10 or 12 feet in the air. It would work as a form of snow fence.

One of the really cool things about our new house is that we are just down the street from “the sledding hill”. When we were moving here we would describe where we were moving to and a lot of people would suddenly say “That’s right by the sledding hill right?” Not knowing the sledding hell we couldn’t confirm. With over 3 feet of snow in December we can confirm the sledding hill is just down the street.

Proper sledding options made me check our sleds. Mazie had a little kid sled as well as a slightly bigger plastic one. However, none of her sleds would fit both of us, and they weren’t steerable. In short, they didn’t live up at all to my memories as a kid of a sled.

\n

I started to look for new sleds and that is when I realized the sorry state of sleds. Let me be clear, a flexible slab of plastic 0.5mm thick is no more a sled than a sitting on a garbage bag. All the sleds I could find locally were total junk made to be cheap, fit by the thousand in a shipping container and had nothing to do with sledding. Steering? Nope. Drag reduction? Nope. Total and complete garbage.

So I went online and there I found the small niche of real sleds still alive and kicking. I just placed an order for a Mountain Boy Sledworks kit, two in fact. I’m likely crazy, but I wanted a toboggan as well as a maneuverable rocket. And yes, I got the sled pads too!

I was shoveling the driveway for what seems like the 20th time already. For some reason I haven’t pulled the snow blower out yet. It’s been fun getting out there with the shovel, and Chase in particular has fun running around in the snow. He was having a blast today, and took a break in some pretty deep powder.

I’ve been taking the dogs out on walks every morning, provided the temperature is about 0 °F. Now that we’ve had a bunch of snow I’ve found the morning to be a bit slippery, especially on the one hill. And the fresh snow doesn’t give much traction. Feels a lot like walking in sand.

I was reading Robert Craig’s blog and saw his post about his YakTrax and how well they worked. This seemed like a great addition to my morning activities. Santa Claus visited our house early last night (we are traveling this Christmas) and left some YakTrax for me, as well as winter gear for the dogs.

\n

The YakTrax are easy to get on. They slip on the bottom of your shoe without much hassle. I have the YakTrax Walkers. The dogs and I went out for an hour today and the YakTrax made a huge difference. I didn’t slip at all, and had as much traction for walking as I’d ever want to have.

\n

Tammy said that some people online were complaining that they had broken on them, sometimes on the first use. I’ve only wore them once so I can’t speak to how well they will last. I can see how if you put them on wrong, or had one of the bands crimped badly, it could cause a problem. We’ll see.

\n

In the meantime, if you walk reasonable distances in the snow, I’d highly recommend buying a pair of YakTrax.

Alright, the weather is really starting to bother me. Today, December 30th it was 41 °F while we were driving around this afternoon and it was raining. This wasn’t a “normal” winter rain. This rain felt like April showers. Nice big drops with a regular patter on the street. It’s December! Where is the snow!? I realize talking about the weather is so very Minnesotan of me. The faithful readers of this website probably care about my weather as much as what I had for lunch. But I must comment anyway.

I read a great article in last issue of The Week about depression rates being high in Moscow because there was no snow! This is the warmest winter ever for Moscow and the days are so short that the lack of the snows reflective qualities results in their rarely being any light.

Stunning! Shocking! Our power went out again at 4:04 pm today. It returned, fitfully with a lot of jerking and stopping around 6:30 pm.

I’ve been asked many times in the last day “Why is thingelstad.com down?” I guess I should be happy that people actually cared when my little corner of cyberspace became unavailable for 21 hours and 26 minutes in the last couple of days. But really, it’s not like “the Internet” was down or anything. 🙂

We had a wild, wild storm here on Tuesday night. This was by far the worst storm I’ve been in – maybe ever. The winds were in excess of 70 mph. It’s the first storm that I felt a real need to get into a room that had no glass in it. The power went out fairly quickly and all the battery backups did their job, as long as they could at least.

Needless to say it was more than a minor inconvenience to be “in the dark” for so long. And if you know me, you realize this is just another episode in the continuing saga of horrible electric service where I live (example, example. I’m very seriously considering a\ngenerator. Our power service is horrible (example, another). There is just no way around it. We seem to get regular under-voltage events and the occasional power cycle on a regular basis. Every once in a while for fun we get thrown a multi-hour outage as well. What a blast! For a computer geek like myself, this is nerve racking. I had some new UPS units on my Amazon wish list for a long time but it seems nobody thinks that is a fun present.

I hadn’t “right-sized” my UPS for my server for years. During that time I went from a simple tower with a couple of drives to my terabyte server with 10 platters spinning at all times. The Back-UPS Pro 650 I had on it was completely inadequate and to make it even better a couple months ago the battery had given up the ghost so there was NO battery power at all. I issued a self-test one day on accident which resulted in an immediate reboot!

I upgraded my server setup to a Smart-UPS 1500VA RM model. I chose the rack-mount model because I plan in the coming weeks to buy a half-rack for my server gear in the laundry room to get it all organized and setup nice. Great UPS. Got a little nervous first time I plugged it in. This thing has much more robust circuitry than any other UPS I have so it makes a lot of “electrical noises”.

I also solved the problem for my home theatre PC and the two TiVos. Now we will not miss our favorite satellite content even if the power is down for a bit! 🙂 I got a Back-UPS RS 1000VA for this stuff. My only disappointment here is that it seems that the Back-UPS RS line only works with PowerChute Personal Edition so I cannot tie it into the main PowerChute Console and manage everything from one place. Maybe they will change that in a future release of the software.

I got a new battery for my old Back-UPS Pro 650VA and that is now running my office and moved the absolutely lame Back-UPS 350VA that I had here to my iMac G5. Every computer is now on its own UPS. Yeah!
