We love to visit Express Yourself Art Barn when we are in Saugatuck. They have a ton of great projects and the people that run it create a great space and are incredibly helpful. We decided to all do pottery painting today. Tammy and I did three decorative lanterns in various rainbow effects, Mazie made her own garden stakes, and Tyler decided to do a Turtle Bank!

After arriving in Saugatuck from Rochester this morning we went straight to Retro Boat Rentals to get our 4pm reservation for our Donut Boat. Only Tammy really knew what we were getting, but we all had an awesome time once we got into our pink Donut Boat and tooled around the Kalamazoo River and Kalamazoo Lake. The donut boat is all electric and extremely quiet and incredibly easy to use. It tops out at a leisurely 4 mph. Perfect for enjoying a beverage and great company.

We spent an hour a sand beach just before the Kalamazoo River enters Lake Michigan before returning the donut to the rental shop. If you ever get a chance to go out in a donut boat, do it. ๐Ÿคฉ

We took a 90-minute river Erie Canal cruise today on the Sam Patch. We got to go to Lock 32 and experience that and then went back the other way to see where the canal is actaully 70’ higher than the houses in the area.

This morning we drove from St. Johnsbury over to New Hampshire for the day. Our first event of the day was an amazing 2+ mile hike to see the Flume Gorge. Due to COVID-19 they were requiring tickets and timed entries. When we got there people were actually queued up to get in which seemed surprising to me. As we made our way up the gorge I realized why this was such a popular hike. The route was stunning, which immaculate paths and great wooden staircases going right up inside the gorge itself! I kept wondering what this must be like in the Spring when so much more water must be going down it.

We visited the Fairbanks Museum & Planetarium today in St. Johnsbury, VT. The museum has been operating since 1889, and is a bit of a museum piece itself. It shows what this type of museum would have been like a hundred years ago, with only small modifications to the displays. We also took in two sessions at the planetarium.

When Tammy was researching our Vermont Trip she ran across a place called Dog Mountain just outside of St. Johnsbury, VT. Dog Mountain is a 150 acre private mountaintop spot created by Stephen Huneck and his wife Gwen, as a place for people and dogs to enjoy themselves. Unfortunately we donโ€™t have Lucky with us on this trip, but we still wanted to visit Dog Mountain to check it out.

One of the special places on Dog Mountain is the Chapel. In the Chapel people place photos and notes on the walls to honor the dogs that they have had to say goodbye to. It was an amazing spot, and when Mazie took a pen and put a note on the wall for Chase it made me shed a fresh tear for our great dog that we had to say goodbye to in 2018.

I don’t know if we would have ever found Bread and Puppet Theater without a recommendation from our friend Ellen but it was well worth the additional drive to Glover, VT. Bread and Puppet has been putting on political theater since 1974 in this location. The performances feature funny and serious skits, people on stilts and giant flags, and of course puppets of all sizes and shapes.

I have had a growing interest in the Appalachian Trail ever since I read Bill Bryson’s A Walk in the Woods. So it was a special treat when we were driving back down Bromley Mountain and there was a parking area that connected directly to the Appalachian Trail.

In my head Alpine Slides look dangerous. There is no good reason for that. Visually they look like a luge track and it makes me think of people on bobsleds going at insane speeds. Now having done it, this analogy seems utterly ridiculous, but that is what was in my head. When Tammy put the Alpine Slides at Bromley Mountain on our plan for the day I was anxious.

Mazie, Tyler and I were all first timers on the Alpine Slide. Shortly after getting going I realized this was all just a bunch of fun. The slide was very long and had a ton of fun turns. As a bonus, the chair lift ride up was gorgeous as well. Mazie had a blast and would have gone a dozen more times. Tyler got into the groove of it after a while too.

We went to the horse track today! ๐Ÿ’ธ

We’ve been to Canterbury Park with the kids and have had fun. Saratoga however is much, much bigger. It took us a while to just figure out where to go and sit. Then it took us a while to figure out how to read everything and understand how it all worked. But, after a bit we mostly got the hang of it. By the end I felt confident to go up to the betting stands and say stuff like “$10 on 5 to place”. Careful reading of the program was a big help.

\n

Our bets for the day. We only had two winners. I made an epic bad on on Race 6 after getting enamored with the idea of an “Across the Board” bet, which is actually three bets in one: one to win, one to place, and one to show. I thought the bet divided amongst them but it actually multiplies, so I ended up betting three times what I thought. Ooops. And that horse was absolutely terrible in that race, coming in last by several lengths.

We had a super fun time and it was cool to be at such a historic race track.

On our drive to Saratoga we spotted Kaleidoscope Cafe and decided the mix of BBQ and homemade Ice Cream was the perfect combination we wanted for lunch. We stopped in and Bruce, the gregarious owner, welcomed us and gave us a rundown of the menu. Everything here is made by him personally, except the hot dogs. He gave me a sample of all four of his BBQ sauces. I wanted to buy a couple of bottles to take home but he’s not selling that, yet. We had brisket and pulled pork and all of it was great. The mac-n-cheese goes perfect with the brisket.

We of course had ice cream as well. The Peanut Butter Infusion was amazing, but equally great was the Sweet Blue-Nilla which we tried in both scoop and shake options. Easily the best blueberry ice cream I have ever had.

We had a great time and heard some of Bruce’s story, and how he opened Kaleidoscope just last year in the middle of the pandemic. He’s powered through and pivoted a bit but is continuing to build out a great place for BBQ and Ice Cream. If you are in the area, you need to make a stop and say Hi! ๐Ÿ‘‹

We have had a delightful time staying in the Modern Accord Depot in Accord, NY. Staying in a renovated train station has been a unique and fun experience. A Train Caboose in the yard to play in was incredible. A dance studio to have fun in as well?

We took a tour of Historic Huguenot Street in New Paltz, New York today. It was an interesting peek into this pocket of Calvanism in New York and the critical role that the founding 12 houses made in the area. We got a tour of a native Wigwam that was common before the Huguenots arrival. Then a recreation of a church. Finally we toured the Jean Hasbrouck house.

This morning we rented bikes from New Paltz Biking and took a 16.2 miles round-trip ride on the Wallkill Valley Rail Trail. It was a wonderful ride and the Trellis Bridge 160 feet above the Hudson River provided immense views. We turned around at the Ice Caves that felt like you were standing in front of a giant air conditioner.

The original site for Woodstock is just a little bit down the road from the historical marker. The original stage location has several cairns and peace symbols. It was cool to stand in that spot and look towards the hill and imagine 500,000 people! โœŒ๏ธโ˜ฎ๏ธ
