My boat motor won’t run and its been a saga. The shop is coming to fix it, or tow it, later this week. In the meantime, snowy boat. 🤦♂️❄️🚤

First significant snowfall for Twin Cities. This should all melt and let us get back to raking. 🍂❄️
Trying tagging people whose articles I am commenting and sharing in the Weekly Thing. Example on LinkedIn and Twitter for issue 161. Will be watching to see if this is appreciated or seen as tag spam, and if it results in additional awareness.
Cashed in a chip with the kids and got them to watch Star Wars I: The Phantom Menace. They have resisted Star Wars but this one was their favorite over episode IV. There is still hope. 🍿
Made a 3 ½ lb tenderloin special dinner tonight. Cubed the tip and fried with olive oil and garlic. Put the rest in Sous Vides for 3 hours and a finish sear in Big Green Egg. Scalloped Potatoes and homemade Peanut Butter Pie for desert. 🤤🔥
October in Cross Lake, MN. Bikes collecting snow. ❄️
41% of voters already completed voting seems high for the middle of October. I wish this had a comparison to previous years.
As of Oct 15, 68 percent of Edina residents have applied for an absentee ballot and of this total, 60 percent have returned their ballot or, 41 percent of registered voters. - Edina Friday Report for Oct 16, 2020
Lake Superior selfie. 😊
First time visiting Black Beach today, just outside of Silver Bay.
Technically we did hike some of the Superior Hiking Trail today. 🥾🗺
We had a great hike up the Temperance River Falls today.
Upper Falls of the Temperance River.
Looking at a Winter Snowstorm warning with 3-5 inches of snow we decided to end our MEA weekend early. We detoured back to Cross Lake and are going to dry camp in the parking lot and head home tomorrow. Also, the Weekly Thing will be delayed a day! ❄️
My Theory of RVs:
All RVs represent a giant set of compromises to make the space work.
The key an RV you love is finding one where you agree with the compromises. 🤔
Getting World’s Best Donuts in Grand Marais. They close for the winter tomorrow! 🍩☕️❄️
The autumn wave of the coronavirus has reached a dangerous new stage. The number of new daily cases has risen almost 50 percent in the U.S. over the past month. The situation is even worse in Europe.
For the first time since late March, the per capita number of new cases in Europe exceeds the number in the U.S.
The New York Times, Morning Brief, October 15, 2020.
There is an official station to take a selfie with Split Rock Lighthouse, so we had to stop and take one! Look close on right side of photo for lighthouse. #MNStateParkLife
Gooseberry Falls was great today. Great sights. Lots of fun hopping around rocks. Even with cold weather still a lot of fun.
Mandatory stop at Betty’s Pies outside of Two Harbors. We got Blueberry, Strawberry Rhubarb, Toffee, and Butterfinger slices to have after dinner. Good pie, but they are struggling with their process. Took over 30 mins to get our order.
Always stop at Great Lakes Candy Kitchen on the North Shore. Business still thriving and adapted to pandemic. Delicious chocolate. Yum.
Lunch at New Scenic Cafe is a must do for us when we visit the North Shore. They have an outside operation during the pandemic and many spots with fires going to keep you warm.
Dinner in Grand Marais at Voyageur Brewing Company. Drinking limited release Devil’s Kettle Dry Hopped with Galaxy Hops, in the room it was brewed. 🍺
We went to Ursa Minor Brewing to get pizza and a drink while we waited outside. I had the Blackberry Shenanigans sour and it was delicious. The pizza was very good too! Happy to have fires to keep warm too. 🍕🍻🍬
Rainy drive from Cross Lake to Duluth. 🌧
Picked up the Winnebago View for our 5-day road trip. Initial impression of the View is positive. It feels very spacious when the extension is out. The couch/Murphy bed is nice. Drives very well. Looks good too.
Tomorrow we are renting this fabulous 2018 Winnebago View and going on a short loop around Northern Minnesota. Duluth, Grand Marais, Grand Rapids, and Park Rapids. It’s going to be a chilly MEA trip! 🥶
The daily chart from The Economist showing the price ranges of the iPhone since launch puts some perspective on the price of the newest iPhones, as we wait for todays announcement of the next new iPhone.
This weekend I wired up two additional platforms that I’m syndicating to. I’m now sharing to Mastadon and am
@firstname.lastname@example.org. This is built into micro.blog so I decided to turn it on for those that may prefer it. I also configured Zapier to share the Weekly Thing to Medium. If you prefer Medium you can find @jthingelstad there and this is a full share, with all the content. Right now I’m only sharing the Weekly Thing to Medium. The best way to get all of of my stuff directly is still via RSS or Email.
In Paul Jarvis Sunday Dispatch today he highlights how he disagrees with the assumption in “main-stream startup culture” that you have to “move at break-neck speed”. I started writing a reply in email and decided to make it a post instead. 🙂
I think Jarvis is largely right on this. I strongly dislike the growing use of the word “hustle” in startups. It feel cheap and underhanded (to pressure or coerce). Hustle and pivot are now widely accepted terms, and both describe what are likely failure modes.
Also bringing in physics, fast isn’t enough. Speed in a direction is needed. Velocity. A lot of speed at all costs ignores the fundamental question of “where are we going?”
Maybe ignoring where you are going is why pivot and hustle are so prominent in the language?
Mazie took this hilarious photo of Lucky today. Love it. 🤣
We found another use for the leaf blower today! 🛹💨
It was great to see the current ACE Leadership class present at todays MnTech Board meeting. They formed multiple teams and engaged with Genesys Works, Lunar Startups, Reve Academy, PCs for People, and Technovation[MN]. These teams worked with their non-profit partners to do analysis on recommendations, new programs and other ways to continue to drive their mission forward. This was a great way to learn more about these groups and what they are doing, further develop technology talent with real world experience, and give back to organizations that are doing good in our community! 👏
I upgraded the video conferencing setup in my home office. Setup a studio light that I’ve had for photography. Got an Audio-Technica AT2005USB microphone on a mini-boom. The audio is incredibly better. The light is a big help early in the morning.
Happy Birthday to my amazing, awesome, and astounding Mom! 🎉 I would literally be nothing without her. I have been so lucky to have someone to guide, teach, and help me throughout my life. 💚
I prefer voting by mail. We get the kids involved. We can do research on the smaller down ballot elections and make more informed decisions. It is much more relaxing and allows the electorate to be more informed. I will be delivering the package by hand to the city office.
It took 6 months for COVID-19 to go from the March lockdowns to the White House. COVID-19 is still less than one year old!

Had a great evening with a couple of friends sitting around the fire, drinking an Old Fashioned or three, and having good laughs. 🥃🔥
Finished a much needed organizing and upgrading of my home office setup. This is working much better on every dimension.
Amazon’s marketing strategy with Ring seems to be:
Delicious plate of tomatoes grown by our old neighbor. 🍅
Enjoying this home brew Belgian Witbier with Coriander and Orange Peel that my friend Garrick gave to me. Refreshing. Tastes like summer. 🍺
Hit a new 60-min PR in Matt Wilpers Power Zone Endurance Ride this morning! 653 kJ, a 10% jump over previous 591 kJ. It was a Zone 2/3 ride but I felt my zones were a little low so I rode more ¾. Should do a new FTP test. 🙌🚴🏼♂️🏆
Mazie cross country meet today In Chanhassen. Running 5k. 👏
First time we’ve had a full unplanned Xfinity service outage during remote work and school. Switched everyone to use their phones as hotspots. Hopefully service is restored soon. There is major construction a block away that I suspect is related.
Update: Service came back after only about 15 min. Wonder what the issue was… 🤔
Hit a new 45-minute PR on Peloton this morning in Jenn Sherman’s class. 553 kJ. Not sure about Yacht Rock for spinning though. 😬 Helped to a PR with byteCoder, YukonJack, coppel87, and AreBurns. 🙌 #FitByFifty
Updating firmware is one of my favorite things. 🤓 Updating the new IntelliConnect.
The hand washing feature in watchOS 7 seemed a bit silly but I turned it on and I’ve actually liked it. It is good at detecting washing, and it has already resulted in me washing for longer. I even get a graph! I also like the nudge to wash your hands when you get home.
I have wanted folders in Shortcuts since it was called Workflow. It is a huge help to have that in iOS 14. I rediscovered shortcuts I had forgot about because they were lost in the flat library! I also love that I can group project specific shortcuts like the Weekly Thing.
iOS 14 is sharing an insight with me that it is using more battery. Neat insight, how about a fix? 😬
Saddened to hear of the death of Ruth Bader Ginsburg. She has been a historic justice on the Supreme Court. She gave everything to the movements she believed in, and our country. 😢🇺🇸
The final thing we needed to do for our pool project was replace the septic system at our cabin. I think it’s good that I wasn’t there when they did it and cut through gas and water lines, irrigation lines, and even low voltage lines. I just checked in at times on the NestCams. Hard to dig a giant hole out and put a big thing in it without disturbing a bunch of stuff.
Last night as we were getting ready to go to sleep I noticed that a helicopter had been circling overhead for a while. It was circling large swaths around Highway 62 and France Ave, just a few blocks from our house. Tammy found out via NextDoor what as up, and we quickly heard what turned out to be a mugging attempt that turned into a shooting at Fairview Southdale. We later learned the victim survived despite a gunshot to the head, but the suspect fled on foot and was “at large”. The helicopter was searching. The police asked everyone to leave their exterior lights on which we did. They didn’t catch the suspect, and still haven’t.
EDINA: CONFIRMED SHOOTING outside Southdale Medical Center, 6545 France Ave. S. - A male victim was shot in the head while in the west ramp, on the 2nd level. Orchards aren’t doing U-pick this year but Honeycrisp Apples are ready. We got some apples and delicious snacks at Blossom Hill Orchard & Farm in Preston, MN.
Lanesboro is a great central location on the Root River Trail to explore a variety of different cities in Southern Minnesota.
We took a morning walk around Lanesboro. It had just finished raining and everything looked nice and there weren’t very many people out. We spent some time in Lanesboro Arts. They always have interesting work from local artists.
Lucky got shaved down at the groomer today. She had too many mats in her fur. She looks way different! An okay look, but we’ll let her fur grow out again. 💈🐩
Family movie tonight, National Treasure. Tyler’s pick. Fun story. 🍿
Nice lunch today at Keepsake Cidery outside of Northfield. They have a great selection of ciders, sandwiches, and snacks. Worth the drive and they have a great outdoor space. Dogs welcome too. 🍎
Some serious weather rolling through Cannon Lake tonight. Constant lightning. Heavy rain and thunder. Multiple waves of hail. Wind is only thing missing. Also learned we have a window with a leak. 😬⛈💧
Good night for s’mores! 🔥
Heather’s in South Minneapolis has quickly become a family favorite for dinner out on their large patio. Our food has all been great, and the space is relaxing and enjoyable. Recommended. 🍽
Tammy and I finally watched A Star is Born. We both enjoyed it. Great acting. Music was of course great. 🍿
Thumbs Cookies were a perfect snack at the end of a long bike ride. Their KIRBY mobile unit was in Linden Hills.
Tammy and I had a perfect night for a gorgeous 15 mile ride around the the chain of lakes.
Lucky is 8 months old today. She looks so small in her 3 month photos now. She also has this adorable habit of crossing her front legs.
I took my Yama Cold Brew Tower out for the first time in a long time today and was reminded how delicious the coffee is from this process. Smooth and delicious. Patience required though.
Potential Zoom feature: Autopilot
When autopilot is on the Zoom client will automatically leave meetings at the scheduled time, and automatically connect to the next meeting. No user input needed. There could be a preference for a brief intermission to stretch.
Got a new 45 minute PR this morning in Sam Yo’s class! 122 out of 1,443 riders live. 523 kJ total output. 🚴🏼♂️🏆💪
FC Bayern Münich celebrating their Champions League title! Great game! Nueur: “A human brick wall.” 21 consecutive wins. ⚽️🏆🇩🇪 Tyler was in full Bayern kit for the game.
These lanterns are very fun to watch fly. This one soared high above Pokegama Lake.
I came up with a new tag line for canoes:
Canoes, what 100 years of innovation left behind.
I’m not a fan of canoes. 😊
Enjoying a Lift Bridge Mango Blonde from my brothers dock on Lake Pokegama. 👍🍻
Discovered the Planters Nutmobile in our neighborhood on our evening walk tonight! Will be curious to see how this story evolves! 🥜
Just barely put up another PR this morning in Kendall Toole’s Metal Ride. 394 kJ (+1 over previous). Strong finish with Master of Puppets at the end. 🤘 #FitByFifty
I’ve made 71 loans on Kiva over the years and just setup Monthly Good that automatically funds loans. Great program since I like what Kiva does, but forget to relend funds. Now I can lend more, and know the funds are being put to work!
No fairs so this Pronto Pup stand has been open on the side of Highway 60 this summer. I stopped for dinner tonight. I prefer corn dogs but this was pretty good too.
Hit a new 30-minute spin PR this morning! 393 kJ (+11 from previous). #FitByFIfty
This graph speaks volumes about the impact to society from the pandemic.
Very strong storm woke me and the dog up. Lots of thunder and lightning. Tripped the power. Pea sized hail. Scared Lucky enough she hid in the basement.

Small but very intense storm coming through. Major thunder cracks. ⚡️⛈
Mazie’s garden is thriving, and now it has an official placard. She has a real knack for gardening, and seems to enjoy it a lot.
This is one of the oddest places I’ve had to deal with a hornets nest. 😬
Awesome win by MNUFC over San Jose tonight! On to the semifinals against Orlando! ⚽️🙌
Most terrifying thing about renting the RV? Taking it to the truck wash before returning it and navigating this shockingly small entry! Should have brought a helper. Only a few inches on every side. 😬
Today is our final stretch with a 593 mile drive back to Minneapolis! We’ve had an awesome Yellowstone RV trip! 🙌
Family selfie at Mt. Rushmore!
We pulled into the Palmer Gulch KOA last night and got setup. Checking it out this morning and this is easily the fanciest KOA I’ve seen. They say it’s one of the largest in the country.
Enjoyed a beautiful drive through the Shoshone National Forest today on our way from Jackson, WY to Mt. Rushmore in SD.
We had delicious takeout burgers from Grazer’s in Newcastle, WY just before entering South Dakota!
Going to be covering over 470 miles today. Leaving Jackson, WY and checking in at Mt. Rushmore KOA tonight. We loved our time in the Tetons! 🛣
It was cloudy tonight but Wyoming Stargazing still got us out to see some cool stuff. Here is the moon tonight from Jackson, WY.
Hidden Falls by Jenny Lake in Grand Tetons National Park. This may be my favorite waterfall ever.
Grand Tetons. Mt. Moran from Oxbow Bend.
Afternoon ice cream from Jackson Drug in Jackson, WY.
Facial recognition doesn’t stand a chance with my pandemic vacation wear.
Bison in Yellowstone.
Tyler got the Collectors Edition Yellowstone Monopoly while in Yellowstone, and then played it a bit in the RV while driving in Yellowstone! Very meta!
We had a nice (socially distanced) walk along the Snake River / Emily Stevens Park in Jackson, WY with Kendra Gapinski @klgapinski and family! #TeamSPS
We played the Camp board game last night for the first time. Fun RV game. Good game that can be played with multiple ages at the same time. Tammy won!
The KOA that we are at has no WiFi and no cellular signal. We’ve been offline for 3 days except for an occasional stop in some town. Tonight we all got in the rental car and drove into West Yellowstone to get LTE signal! 📱
We all had a great morning fly fishing on the Gallatin River! Tammy caught 2 trout, Tyler got a little Rainbow Trout and Mazie had a bunch of bites. I got a Rocky Mountain Whitefish that gave a lot of fight. Gallatin River Guides were great. 🎣
Afternoon ice cream stop in Gardiner, MT at the Yellowstone North Entrance. 🍦
Pulled into West Yellowstone KOA last night. Gorgeous drive here. They are not famous for their WiFi. 😜
Current news from Ennis,MT. 🎣
Short video tubing down the Madison River.
I’m sure that there are people that can look cool with a GoPro attached to their forehead. However, I am not one of them. 😬
We had a fabulous afternoon tubing down the Madison River today outside of Bozeman, MT. We went with Madison River Tubing and they set everything up perfect for us. The water was gorgeous, we had perfect weather, and the cooler with beverages was a nice addition.
We had a great dinner outside (pandemic!) at MAP Brewing last night. Perfect weather overlooking a recreational lake. The Midas Crush was great. 🍺
It was 2005 when Tammy first stumbled upon EarthRoamer and I instantly went down that “rabbit hole.” Yesterday we stopped for groceries while in Bozeman, MT and I spotted an EarthRoamer! It was the first time I’d seen one in person. The thing is impressive, and massive. 🤩
Successfully managed the emptying of the grey water and black water tanks in the RV. Feels like this deserves some sort of merit badge. 🏅

Hitting the road in the RV!
Just picked up our 2020 Jayco Redhawk 22J from Hilltop Campers. We are getting it packed for our two week road trip to Yellowstone National Park! 🛣
The Robbinsdale water tower may be more accurately described as a cell tower that happens to have water too.
The knife ceiling at Travail catches your attention. 🔪
Lucky got her first grooming today. She looks a little strange but is very fluffy. This was a partial grooming. Part 1 of 2…
Tammy and I enjoyed Self Made on Netflix. Very good four-part series on Madam C.J. Walker and the empire she built on hair products. 🍿
We went to Heather’s for the first time tonight. They have an amazing outdoor patio and the weather was just perfect. We loved our dinner: Cheesesteak, Cubano, Buddha Bowl, Field Burger and we shared the Chocoalte Caramel Sea Salt Cake. Recommended! 🍽

Family bike ride with Dairy Queen in the middle! 🍦🚴🏼♂️🚴♀️🚴🏼♂️🚴♀️
Last night we enjoyed Dennis Watkin’s Magic Parlour at Home show. We’ve seen his amazing magic in Chicago, and this live experience over Zoom was awesome! It is super engaging, and a great example of online entertainment! Highly recommended! 🎩
Delicious pork butts on the Big Green Egg! 🤤🔥🐖
This Warpigs Foggy Geezer Hazy IPA is one of the coolest looking cans of beer I’ve seen. 🍺
I got my Peloton Century Club shirt yesterday! Like it!
Very impressed with Decadent Saint Ultimate Mixer! Just add water and it’s a delicious refreshing drink for a summer afternoon!

I dropped my iPhone in the water yesterday and when I went to charge it last night I got this notice. I was able to charge it this morning. However, FaceID is not working right now. I’m hoping that clears up shortly.
Want corn knee-high by the Fourth of July? What does it mean when it’s over your head by the Fourth of July?
Made a short trip to Montgomery, MN tonight to get some delicious beer from Montgomery Brewing and great pizza to-go from Pizzeria 201. Eating on a blanket by the railroad tracks was an adventure though.
The fireworks on Cannon Lake were even more amazing than usual this year. Our neighbor launched more big fireworks than many cities do! 🤩💥🧨
Hanging out in the pool watching fireworks overhead is pretty amazing. 😊💥
Happy 4th of July everyone — in fruit pizza! 🇺🇸💥
Pork butts done with their journey and time to shred. Thank you Big Green Egg and Sous Vides for the journey! 🇺🇸🔥🐖
30 seconds of Big Green Egg Zen Smoke for your viewing and relaxing pleasure. 🔥
Pork Butts out of the Sous Vides baths and now onto the Big Green Egg for 3 hours of smoke! 🔥
We tried Grandpa’s Ice Cream in Fridley for the first time today. Great flavors. The people were super nice and everyone had masks and were well distanced. The ice cream was a great break from the heat! 🍦
4th of July barbecue prep started today. Rubbed two nice pork butts and ready for Sous Vides baths over next 48 hours.
Our whole family was excited to hear that Arcade1Up is coming out with Ms. PAC-MAN! We will be swapping our PAC-MAN machine out as soon as we can. The cabinet looks great! 🕹
I was in Google Street View today and was surprised to see that it had a picture of our house before it was completely rebuilt. It is fun to see what was here before.
Lucky had her 6-month birthday today! She is 42 lbs now, and is still very much a puppy, but calming down some. She’s a great dog and learning more every day!
I’m getting even more excited about our upcoming RV road trip to Yellowstone National Park! It is going to be a great adventure! We are making stops at:
I’m not very handy, so I get disproportionately excited when I do complete little home projects. New drier vent with guard installed! Last winter the squirrels put over 20 pine cones in the vent!
The southwest dogleg of Cannon Lake is already extremely weedy with a lot of floating algae. The boat lanes look like roads. With July and August still ahead of us, this could be a pretty bad year for algae.
Email from our daughters high school:
“Due to budget cuts, the number of counselors serving Washburn students has shrunk from 5 to 3. Though our enrollment will once again be approximately 1650 students…”
We are in an incredibly anxious time. Many families are destabilized due to the pandemic and record unemployment. Add to that the tough work that we need to do on racism. Reducing counselors by 40% in the midst of that feels short-sighted.
Budgets are what they are, but hopefully these kids are going to find some support in their communities and families too, as many will need it.
We had a great backyard guitar performance tonight. 🎸
New 30-minute PR this morning! 378 kJ (+2 from previous). 39% of the time anaerobic! 🚴🏼♂️ #FitByFifty
This is bad. There are states safely reopening. Others should be following their lead. 😷
Tammy and I had dinner on the patio at Italian Eatery tonight. It was the first time we ate at a restaurant since March 15th! I surprised myself by how excited I was to be out somewhere! Super Tuscan red wine, Shaved Root Salad, and Baked Garganelli with Meatballs. 🤤
Mazie is growing some peppers, Brussels, herbs, and other food in a raised garden bed this summer. She loves to tend to the plants and even likes weeding. She’s trying this out with an eye towards a full garden in the future.
Galaga was one of my favorite arcade games back in the day. I got this awesome Quarter Arcade Galaga Cabinet for Father’s Day this year. The game play is a perfect replica! 🕹
I’m one lucky guy to get to celebrate Father’s Day with these two awesome kids and my wonderful wife.
Happy Fathers Day to all the other Father’s out there!
We had a great day yesterday with my stepdad Bruce, sister Alona, and nephew Garrett! The kids had a great time in the pool! 🏊♂️
Break for video games. 🕹
And a fabulous boat ride around the lake! 🛥
Picking strawberries at Straight River Farms this morning. 🍓
At Milton’s Vittles, Vino, and Beer to pickup dinner and things are very busy. I think the various Black-owned business lists have been effective in getting the word out!
Game of Life with the kids tonight. 🎲
Hit a new 30-min PR spinning this morning. 376 kJ, +10 kJ over previous PR. 🙌 #FitByFifty
We visited Minneopa State Park today and I can’t believe I haven’t seen these falls before. Impressive double falls with great viewing areas.
Cracked the plate setter on my Big Green Egg but was able to position it to still hold the grid up. The smoke must go on!
I hit my Century Ride on Peloton today! Did my 100th ride with Ally Love’s 30-min 90s Ride. #FitByFifty
We had BarrkArt Fencing come and fence in our back yard so Lucky can have a space to run around. They did a great job matching the fence in with the existing segments and connecting to some difficult terrain. They even put a small privacy fence in to hide our trash bins. Great company. Would absolutely recommend working with them!
Gorgeous blue sky in downtown Minneapolis today.
Today was my first day in the office in 85 days. It is very quiet! Devices updated, password changed, and other things that were easier to do on office network done.
We all watched The Secret Life of Bee’s tonight.
George Floyd’s memorial service was today and broadcast live. Tammy and I watched the entire service. Our daughter also joined us for it. It was moving and very powerful. One quote that struck me:
“What we are doing is helping America be America for all Americans!”
Brandi Carlile celebrated her 39th birthday with a streaming concert from her home. It was great, and a wonderful time to embrace some beautiful music in these troubling times.
A lot of people and small businesses are going to need our help recovering and rebuilding along Lake Street in Minneapolis. Join me in making a donation to We Love Lake Street to help these efforts.

An amazing milestone with Falcon 9 successfully launching two astronauts on the way to the International Space Station! 🚀🇺🇸❤️
NASA and SpaceX are cleared for launch. We are all watching to see history being made! 🚀
There are a lot of complicated things that I understand very well, however the impact holidays have on garbage collection schedules is not one of them. 🤷♂️
Tammy unlocked a perfect pandemic evening for us last night. First, get a bottle of a beverage of choice. We had a bottle of Moscato d’Asti. Second, place a to go order at Station Pizzeria. Get your pizza at the scheduled time, and park in Burwell Park about a block away. Enjoy said beverage with your pizza along the shore of Minnehaha Creek, the sound of rushing water in the background. Afterward, walk back where you were and get dessert at the Dairy Queen and have a casual stroll back to the park with your ice cream.
5 stars! Would do again!
Bummer that the SpaceX / NASA launch is scrubbed for today. Next time! The control panel of the capsule is amazing looking.
I hit a new 30-min PR doing Jess King’s House Ride tonight. I pushed hard, the music was great. #FitByFifty
We watched The Biggest Little Farm tonight. This was part of a school assignment Mazie had to watch one of a list of movies and then write an essay on it. We all enjoyed it. This type of farming is a hard path, but a rewarding one when it works.
I made Sous Vide burgers tonight. I have wanted to try these for a long time since everything else has been so good on the Sous Vide, but I was intrigued by how this would all work.
I kept it simple, 1 lb of ground beef, 1 egg, salt and pepper. We cooked in the water bath and then fried with butter in a hot pan, constantly basting 30 seconds on each side. I also managed to set off the smoke detectors in the process. 👀
The end product was a very juicy, perfectly medium-rare burger. But I didn’t find the output to be worth what you have to put into it. I can do burgers on the Big Green Egg much easier. Even Smashburgers on the flat-top are easier. Going to stick to traditional burgers…
No photos since nothing was really picture worthy.
Working through my first pool “issue”. The Saltwater Chlorine Generator was set too low (6%) while we were gone and the chlorine level dropped to near nil. Water was cloudy, but no color. I got HTH® Super Shock! Treatment and added 6.9 lbs to the pool. The water turned green right after adding the granules. Now waiting and hoping it all works out okay. 🤞💧
Added another 2.3 lbs of Super Shock! Treatment later in the evening. Can smell chlorine now, before there was no pool chlorine smell. Did a water test and the Total Chlorine was around 10 ppm, but Free Chlorine is still near 0.
Next morning the water is much less green, but still very green. The cloudy seems to be gone. Water test shows total chlorine around 5 ppm but free chlorine at 0. I thought I didn’t add enough chlorine so added 4.16 lbs HTH Shock Treatment. We had to take off so I left the Chlorine Generator in Boost Mode, it will go back to 20% after the bost. I also added about 2/3 gallon of muriatic acid since the pH level was very high.
I don’t seem to ever get tired of looking at meat smoking on the Big Green Egg. Surly Hell is going perfect today too! 🔥🍺
Little snippet of an in-process project. Fun watching this take shape.
Heavy fog on Cannon Lake at sunrise.
Grateful to get to watch live Bundesliga with Bayern v Frankfurt today. It is very strange though with the stands completely empty. ⚽️
55m: Yikes, two goals in quick succession from Frankfurt bring it to 3-2 with Bayern leading by just one!
Final: Bayern prevailed winning 5-2! 🙌
Tyler has gotten to Calamity Ganon in Legend of Zelda. Super difficult stage. He’s not going to finish him tonight.
Another visit to the Backyard Pandemic Barbershop! Learned tonight that the leaf blower works really well to get the hair off of you at the end. 💈
Hit a new 30-minute PR this morning on my Peloton Bike! Felt great too! #FitByFifty
Minnesota State Fair is officially cancelled for 2020 due to Covid-19. That seemed like the only possible outcome, but feels notable nonetheless.
Solid climbing intervals in this morning’s 30-minute spin workout. I like how the charts look. 📈 #FitByFifty
Super excited to be watching live Bundesliga play with Union Berlin v Bayern! While there are no fans in the stadium, it turns out I can yell at the TV just as loud as ever when VAR calls back a Bayern goal! It was awesome to see Bayern take the win 2-0. We enjoyed some takeout cheeseburgers from Tap Society too! ⚽️
Had to go out and raise the Sea Legs up a foot and adjust the pontoon cover poles in the middle of gale force winds and heavy rain. How did you start your Sunday morning? 😬
We enjoyed a nice short hike to the Hidden Falls at Nerstrand Big Woods State Park today. It was our first time to this state park but we will be back to explore some more!
This graph of DNS requests by client at our cabin is a good example of how metadata and privacy interact. When did we get there? How many people were there? All reasonable things that you could derive from this metadata.
Time to smoke another pork shoulder! Big Green Egg charcoal with chunks of Hickory. 🔥
Tammy has coined the name “European Picnic” for what has become one of our favorite family lunches. Baguette, block of cheese, chocolate to finish. Turkey is an optional addition. Perfect for the four of us.
Micro.blog added a Custom 404 Page feature. I had sent Manton a note asking for this feature just a week ago. Love it! 💛
Such a pleasant evening on Cannon Lake tonight.
We made the jump to an electric lawn mover tonight. We bought the 21” Self-Propelled EGO Power+ from Home Depot. Initial impression is amazing. Much lighter, powerful, easy to use, pretty quiet. Won’t miss pulling on that cord to get it started!
Nice spin session on Peloton this morning, 30-min Rock & Roll class with Emma Lovewell! Geeky fun looking at the mPaceline graphs. #FitByFifty
All data that I have read points to this pandemic lasting for a long time.
“The World Health Organisation warned that it might take five years to bring covid-19 under control and that the virus may never be fully eliminated. It could become endemic, albeit manageable, in the way that, eg, HIV is. Meanwhile an eagerly awaited study suggested that only 5% of 2m people tested in Spain have been infected; nowhere near herd immunity.” — Economist Espresso for May 14th, 2020
Great Season 40 of Survivor “Winners at War”. I wanted Natalie to win though. Tony played a strong game, but Natalie did something nearly impossible!
“The average number of passengers on a commercial flight within the U.S. right now: just 23. Every day, the airline industry is losing almost $400 million.” — NY Times Monday Briefing
Just upgraded one of my Pi-Hole servers to v5.0! All went completely smooth. The new group filtering is interesting. I may put all my Apple TV’s in a group and restrict the DNS dramatically for example. Maybe block all for some Smart Home stuff and only whitelist what it needs.
Lake & Irving is one of our favorite restaurants and they re-opened last week with a limited takeout menu. They have a great setup for getting it to your car and is completely contactless. The Cheeseburger is so delicious! 🍔
Family was craving for some Pavarotti ice cream tonight so Tyler and I made a stop at Sebastian Joe’s! Cold day but they were doing a steady curbside pickup business.
Happy Mother’s Day to my amazing wife Tammy! She is the center of our family. 💕 Our very first pandemic Mother’s Day! 🤠
A very Happy Mother’s Day to my Mom, and to all the Mom’s out there!
Just wrapped up my first attempt at doing pulled pork using the Sous Vide. I started the Sous Vide last night. I let it run for 20 hours at 165. When I pulled the bag out the pork had shrunk and there was about 3-4 cups of liquid in the bag. I poured the liquid into a sauce pan to reduce on the stove. I transferred the pork to the Big Green Egg and let it smoke for 3 hours at 280, with some good chunks of hickory for added smoke. 🔥
When I pulled the pork off the grill the bone pulled out clean and the meat shredded just by pushing on it. It had nice flavor. After pulling it I poured the reduced liquid over to taste. It was delicious and really easy.
Next time I will add more dry rub before putting it on the grill. Otherwise it was one of the best pork butts I’ve ever made. 🐖
Transferred the pork butt to the Big Green Egg after 20 hours in Sous Vide. Time for the finish smoke at 280 for 2-2.5 hours. Reducing the liquid from Sous Vide bag to add back to pulled pork.
“A good newsletter is usually:
1. Consistent in frequency
2. Consistent in format
3. Endlessly repeatable with new content.” — Austin Kleon
First time doing a pork butt using Sous Vide. Pork will cook at 165 in the water bath for 20 hours and will finish with a 2 hour smoke on the Big Green Egg tomorrow. Following Serious Eats directions. 🔥
I am so excited to hear that Bundesliga is resuming the season! Tyler and I will be cheering for Bayern on May 17th! ⚽️
Playing with mPaceline to see longer term trends in my Peloton bike work. Love this graph showing that I’m generating more power for same heart rate. 🚴🏼♂️ #FitByFifty
Lemon Drop Martinis for Cinco de Mayo! 🇲🇽 🍋 🍸
The graphs that mPaceline makes from your Peloton bike rides are pretty impressive. I am looking for ways to track progress over longer time periods. #FitByFifty
The Tetris Shower that we did over a decade ago is still one of my favorite home projects we’ve done. 🤓
Lucky and I on the pontoon.
Boat Day! Beautiful morning to get the pontoon from storage. Heading up Cannon River to Wells Lake and finally to Cannon Lake! 🙌
Pandemic backyard barbershop tonight. Tammy did the honors. Number 1 plus. High and tight. USMC certified. Semper Fi! 💈
Tammy and the kids are so awesome — May Day baskets queued up for delivery to friends and family! 💐
My Defiant One Fat Bike still puts a big smile on my face.
I was explaining TV dinners to my kids and the whole concept made no sense to them. I told them my favorite was Hungry-Man Dinners Turkey Dinner, the potatoes, and the cherry stuff. Related, I’ve figured out what I’m serving the next time it’s my turn to cook dinner! 😁
Wasn’t expecting or trying, but surprised myself with a new 20-min spinning PR this morning on Peloton. 🙌🚴🏼♂️ #FitByFifty
Our new office space in Kyiv, Ukraine is coming along nicely and will be ready for #TeamSPS when we are able to return to the office! The pandemic posed logistical issues but the project team managed through it.
We got takeout from Zetta’s tonight and thoroughly enjoyed the “somewhat original flatbread sandwiches”. I recommend checking this place out. The food is very tasty, very portable, and well suited to take out during social distancing. 👍
We joined my sister and her family for the Extreme Sandbox Heavy Metal Drive-Thru tonight. We had a fun time watching all the heavy equipment play. There were a lot of very excited little kids in attendance honking horns. 😊
We visited the Anderson Center Sculpture Garden today in Red Wing. First time we had been there and it was a fun way to enjoy such a nice day.
Another great Peloton spin class with fellow #TeamSPS members this morning — 30 min 80s Rock Ride! #FitByFifty 🚴♂️
It turns out micro.blog is a pretty excellent live blogging solution. If you use the website you can append repeatedly to a post and just hit publish whenever you want to update. Open another tab for uploading photos and you can do that as well. The post is updated within a few seconds of hitting update. 💭
We weren’t able to get our backyard fencing completed before we got Lucky, so we have erected this barrier that is so far holding her in. Fence company is hoping to get here in a week or two. 🤞
Lucky figuring out how to stand on her hind legs and look out the window.
Wife is on FaceTime call with sister. Daughter is on Zoom call with Piano teacher. Son is on FaceTime call with friend while playing Minecraft together online. Thank you broadband!
First smash burgers of the year! Delicious. 🍔
Clouds blowing through quick on a blustery day. Soon the leaves will be popping.
Riding with #TeamSPS Peloton spinners I got a new 30 minute PR (343 kj) this morning! 💥🚴🏼♂️ #FitByFifty
Just realized that other than taking Lucky for walks, I haven’t left the house since Sunday afternoon. 😬
Playing bartender at home. Strawberry Margaritas. 🍸
Family selfie wearing our custom masks with swappable HEPA filters made by my Mom! 😷🧵
Fun working from home upside — kids made waffles this morning and delivered a stack to me to enjoy! 🧇
The climbing jntervals in today’s spin class were epic. Whew. #FitByFifty
“Black gold.” ☕️🤩
What do you do when your new puppy figures out how to jump on the couch? 🤷🏼♂️
Had a great 30 minute spin class on Peloton this morning. #FitByFifty
As great as yesterday’s weather 🌤 was, that is how not great today’s weather 💨🌧 is. Brrr! 🥶
We took Lucky on a walk that was just too long for her puppy stamina yesterday so I had to carry her for a while.
Awesome pictures of Lucky (3 months old) that Tammy took yesterday. She’s such a cute puppy!
I liked the privacy and security benefits of having a Pi-Hole at home so much that I decided to put one in the cabin too. Next up cable management. 😁
Gorgeous day — enjoying some time outside with a fire! 🔥
We have most of the Osmo games, and today we got Osmo Hot Wheels™ MindRacers. Kids and adults are having fun!
Got a strong reminder that you should not do a Spin class 10 minutes after eating dinner. 😬 #FitByFifty
High quality mid-day espresso is a nice upside of working from home. ☕️
Getting delicious takeout empanadas from Boludo tonight. They seem to be thriving with a ton of business. Great to see! 🥟🤘
Our kids are doing REM5VR Youth Innovation Lab PLUS. I’m impressed with the content, and they are enjoying it. This is a great idea to augment the learning at home experience.
I find it interesting that my Pi-hole blocks 10-20% of DNS requests made when nobody is home. Average of 200 DNS requests every 10 mins when nobody is home, and 20-40 of those are some form of tracking. 😠
Inspiring State of the State from Gov. Tim Walz (@GovTimWalz) tonight. Thank you. #StayHomeMN #OneMinnesota
We are in the middle of doing Get Knit’s “Stay at home Scavenger Hunt” today! The whole family is having a lot of fun!
Would be pretty nifty to get a Zoom app for Tesla. 😁
Lucky carrying a big stick.
GTD practitioners, what project names have you created as we have fallen into this pandemic? I’ll start, one called “Grow through the pandemic”. You?
Great 30 min spin class on Peloton today! #FitByFifty
With apologies to my regular barber Gene, I still need to keep it high & tight! Mazie and Tyler did the clipper honors today! 💈
My friend Mike Rock has picked up posting on his micro.blog (and Twitter by syndication). If your curious to see and here a bit from a Dr. perspective with Covid-19, give him a follow. Plus expect some great non-medical stuff too.
Did a great 45-minute spin class on Peloton today! #FitByFifth
Sitting in our covered porch listening to it rain and thunder is one of my favorite things about spring.

We have a new dog! Lucky joined our family today! She’s our new Bernedoodle.
Getting takeout from Tap Society! Delicious cheeseburgers and we need to support our local businesses! 🍔🍔🍔
I’ve “rebooted” my gratitude journal. 🙏 This may seem like the worst time possible to do that, but I suspect that makes it the best time possible.
We watched A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood tonight. What a fabulous movie. Great performances as well. 🎬⭐️
Doing family voting process for potential dog names! Scout and Milo are at the top. Lucky, Cosmo, Sandy, and Ziggy are the next tranche.
Yeah, about time. 🍺
After three days of working from home my daughter (14) asks “Dad, when do you do your work? All you do is talk to people all day?” 🤩
I’ve been using my Peloton gear more and would like to have more connections there. If you are on Peloton, send give a follow to “JThingelstad”. 🙌🚴🏼♂️💦
Happy St. Patrick’s Day everyone!
Donated to Greater Minneapolis Crisis Nursery. Organizations like this are going to need to help a lot of people soon. Think about where you might be able to help in your community.
We just did our first Family Fitness Challenge while we are staying inside more. Daily challenge for pushups, sit-ups, and plank! #FitByFifty
Family movie last night was The BFG. Good family movie. 🎬
Made my first try making candles. Wood wicks, soy wax. Pretty easy, but not a big fan of the scent I used. Maybe scent-free is the right option.
Celebrating π Day! Chicken pot pie, followed with Chocolate Peanut Butter pie. All homemade! 🥧🤤
In this time of Covid-19 it would be a good gesture for Xfinity, AT&T, and other broadband and wireless carriers to remove data transmission caps on customers.
I’m surprised the NY Times isn’t making an animated version of their Coronavirus maps available that shows the progression.
Currently noticing every single cough in the Orlando airport. 😷
Focus for the rest of the week!
Celebrating International Women’s Day 2020! 👍 #IWD2020 #EachforEqual
Nice 5-2 MN United win over San Jose! 🙌⚽️ #MNUFC
Family movie night with Mr. Popper’s Penguins. 🎬
The top blocked domain that my Pi-Hole is protecting me from every day is api.segment.io. That isn’t a web browser thing that 1Blocker could even block. It is API calls embedded, I suspect, in iOS Apps. I love having multiple layers of surveillance blocking!
Enjoying Tina Schlieske doing solo acoustic show at the 318 Cafe in Excelsior. 🎶
Well, that isn’t supposed to be there. 😤
We had a lot of fun at REM5VR tonight! Beat Saber was my favorite. 🎮
I’m having a fun time with the Pi-Hole just to see the volume of DNS activity on my home network! Green line is total requests, blue is the number that were blocked. #Winning 🙌
Upon seeing this cable tray, Amy Patton @pattonamyj blurts out “That’s beautiful” with absolutely no irony. Only in tech… 🤩🙌 (PS: I agree!) Nice job Target Field tech team!
After the Tech Talent event today John Avenson, VP of Technology for the Minnesota Twins, took a small group on a short technology tour of Target Field. It was an awesome time! I loved hearing how the network works and how all the cabling is routed around.

The Success Stories from Minnesota Workplaces at todays MHTA Tech Talent 2020 event were very informative. It was great to hear what is working for everyone. This event is only in it’s 2nd year but is already a mainstay for the community. #TechTalent
Maybe taking your blood pressure a couple hours after “breakfast for dinner” with bacon isn’t a great idea. 😬🥓
Pi-Hole up and running! Easy to setup. 👍
Configuring my Raspbery Pi 3B+ with Pi-Hole! 🤓
I find the Feb 22nd 2020 cover of The Economist so perfect. I love the imagery of these cybernetic bulls. And probably even more, I like the choice of having them run directly at the viewer — as if you are about to get run over by them.
Wow — Pythonista 3 finally got an upgrade to some of the newest iOS features! And release notes make it clear further Shortcuts support is on the way! 👏

You could tell a thousand stories, probably more, from this graph in the Economist “The strange revival of vinyl records”.
We tried a new way of having #TeamSPS members from other locations present at our All Hands meeting today and it worked really well! Maybe telepresence robots would work well?
How is it possible that LEGO and Pokémon haven’t created a collection of kits? People would buy them like crazy, and both companies would make a bunch of revenue. 🤷🏼♂️💸
Holiday movies — watched Christmas With the Kranks. Pretty funny! 🎄🎬
Cabin is decorated for Christmas now! Tree is cabin themed. Christmas at the lake is one of our favorite family times. 🎄

International business travel and sleep don’t mix well. ✈️🥱
On DL163 from AMS to MSP. One of the flight attendants is on her last flight as she retires with 43 years on the job. Her coworkers made the entire flight special for her with a banner, special hats, and buttons. She shared some heartfelt words with everyone and thanked her husband who is on the flight too. The entire plane applauded her milestone. Well done! 👏

Kubernetes on jets? Neat!
I have to say, I’m really blown away by the #DOD talk at #KubeCon! Has there ever been a 7-game World Series where the home team lost every game? ⚾️
Game 7 of the World Series between Astros and Nationals is an absolute nail biter. Tyler and I are cheering for the Astros! 😬⚾️💥
Game 6 of the World Series is off to a very exciting start! 2-1 Astros at the bottom of the 1st! ⚾️
My original AirPods were badly in need of replacement after going in the pool with me. Just ordered the new AirPods Pro!
First two games Nationals outscored Astro’s 17-7. Next three Astros outscored Nationals 19-3. 46 runs in first 5 games of World Series. ⚾️💥
I have long resisted adding technology to my Big Green Egg, holding that good BBQ is made with fire 🔥, smoke 💨, and love 💚. But these things are getting more interesting. The EGG Genius looks good (it is a Flameboss in a different color).
Twenty six bags! 🍂😬
Preparing the leaf pile. 🍂
Huge Grand Slam from Alex Bregman for the Astros. Wow! ⚾️ 8-1

I like this new feature in the Sanebox digest! Great to get “wisdom of the crowd” benefit. 👍
Tammy and I enjoyed Cabal tonight, from the Walking Shadow Theatre Company. Billed as a “Play with Puzzles”, it mixed actors, puzzle room concepts and an elaborate story. If you like puzzle rooms at all, this is highly recommended. 🎭🧩
Mark O’Leary and I shared some context and excitement with one of our teams as we continue our adoption of Scaled Agile practices. #TeamSPS

The Shortcuts app on iOS should have a setting that causes shortcuts to error if you reference an unknown or undeclared variable. Would help reduce errors and could default to off for folks that do simpler things.

Would like to go to sleep, but my iPhone is my alarm clock. 🤔
Doing complete OS recovery and restore on my iPhone XS to hopefully fix whatever is causing it to burn through CPU and battery like crazy. Spotlight search would not work, I suspect it was stuck in a cycle rebuilding a search index. 🤞📱

Closed on the sale of our old house. Now done with the moving stuff. Time to get settled into the new house. 🙌
Got a 2nd HomePod and am trying out a stereo pair. They sound incredibly good for the size.
“You’re one of 772,904,991 people pwned in the Collection #1 data breach.” That is a shockingly large amount of credentials compromised. Good blog post describing it. Very happy I use unique, random passwords with 1Password!
Is there anything useful to do with 1,500+ CDs and 200+ DVDs? Going thru stuff after move and filtering. Is there an option better than garbage?
Gorgeous day for a smoking session on the Big Green Egg! First smoke at the new house! 🔥
I just preordered Cal Newport’s Digital Minimalism. I was going to buy it anyway so the additional benefits he added were a bonus! 📚

Family friends joined us and we beat the Diagonal Alley room at Trapped North Loop. The room was exceptionally well done, highly recommended! 🧩
My daughter made me the most amazing birthday card! She made a broken laptop out of cardboard and I had to fix it by connecting cables and putting In the “backup email” to unlock her message! It was a puzzle on its own! So fabulous! 🧩🥳
Our family plays Clue every year on New Years Eve while we await the new year, and this year I actually won! 🧐😊

Time for traditional Christmas Eve dinner off the grill! First, have to “bottom start” the Big Green Egg to unfreeze the lid! ❄️🔥 Always leave charcoal in your Egg in the winter!
Surprised the kids with a Home Free concert tonight, the last show on their Christmas Tour, at Treasure Island. 🎤🎼👨👩👧👦

We saw Instant Family last night. Fun, family-focused movie. 🍿
I’m going to give Agenda a solid workout to see if it’s a better solution for tracking work related notes and activities. Keep looking for something that works with the way I work, and this might be it.

Stop & go traffic is by far my favorite use case for Tesla Auto Pilot. Way less stress! 👍🏻
My daughter taught me a new typography fact tonight! Uppercase letters are called that because they were kept in an “upper case”, above the “lower case”, that had the lowercase letters in it! 🤩 Wikipedia backs it up – Fun!
Early Christmas today – Weekly Thing pen! 👍🏻

We had a fun time at the 2018 British Arrows Awards today at the Walker. Liked the Nike, FIFA Soccer and Mini Cooper ads!
Solid boxing workout this morning at TITLE Boxing.
I know I should be super impressed with our amazing, modern technology, but this happens so often and drives me a bit bonkers.
I’m fixing my previous Twitter import and needed to get rid of thousands of existing posts. Little tip, you can use MarsEdit and set the number of posts to get to 9,999 and delete large numbers of posts.
Parked at SPS Tower for a concert at the State Theater. Took skyways and skipped jackets on way there. Didn’t think anout skyways being closed later. It was a very frigid walk back to the car! 🥶
The New Standards brought it home with “Snow Days”, on the permanent playlist for the Holiday Show! 🎶❄️
First half of The New Standards Holiday Show was awesome. Okee Dokee Brothers, The Owls, Chris Koza, Jeremy Messersmith, Matt Wilson, Dessa, Tina Schleske, and Caroline Steele. 🎶

The house band thing at AWS re:Invent just doesn’t work for me. ✋

Cotton Headed Ninny Muggins! Christmas tradition, watching Elf! 🎬🎄
From our family to yours — Happy Thanksgiving!
This new 27” Retina iMac is starved for memory. 64 GB of SO-DIMMs on the way!
Carefully disassembling my single 1.2 TB Lightroom Classic catalog into Lightroom CC and iCloud Photos. Should not have let a single catalog get so big.
I’ve had more spinning beachballs in macOS Mojave than I’ve had in any recent version of macOS.
The Wassail Tea is ready – now Thanksgiving can happen! I love the smell of Wassail in the house.
This Mini Kubb set is a kick, although pretty impossible to play, but still fun!
Got sick with something pretty bad right before leaving Ukraine. Got progressively worse while traveling home and have been taken out all weekend. Ugh. 🤢
Got the new MacBook Air today (Space Gray, 16 GB memory, 500 GB storage). Reminds me how much I liked the form factor on the original MacBook Air. TouchID is great to have, and beautiful Retina display!
It’s surprising to me that this five computer limitation is still around in iTunes. iOS devices don’t count against it, what’s special about Macs?
Monopoly “The .com Edition” can provide hours of entertainment just by looking at all the companies on the board.
Back in Minneapolis! Luggage made it through the short transfer too! 👍🏻
With international travel today, I’m happy to have this weeks Weekly Thing scheduled to go out tomorrow morning! 😊👍🏻
I’m going to finally break, and submit to Adobe’s Creative Cloud Photography subscription (1 TB) and Lightroom CC. Sick of being stuck. 😕
Made my AMS connection. Took 17 min to get from E4, through security, back to main terminal, and finally back to E8! ✈️👍🏻😎
First step, we have an airplane! Going to need everything to go perfect, along with some luck, to make my connection. And run! RUN! 🏃🏼♂️🍀✈️
Not good, flight out of KBP is delayed and I now land in AMS when my connecting flight to MSP takes off. Hoping for magic. 🤞🏻
Had a great evening with #TeamSPS in Kyiv tonight!
First snow in Kyiv! ❄️
Waiting for the sun to come up at Paris CDG. ✈️
I’m finding myself frustrated with pure static hosting. It adds too much friction to publishing. I’m intrigued by Statamic as a ‘best of both worlds’ option. If people have experience with it, I’d love to hear those.
The new 12.9” iPad Pro with the attached keyboard is a good size for an airline seat tray. The previous generation 12.9” I found too large for flights and used the smaller one. This one works fine with keyboard.
Long international flight tomorrow → of course you update the firmware on your headphones! 😁
Wait, the newest version of Apple Photos cannot import DNG files? What the … 😤
After a couple calls it sounds like Ukraine is fine with a passport expiring within 6 months, as long as it’s valid for your trip. Should be good to go! 👍🏻 🇺🇦 ✈️
I might be learning the hard way about flying internationally when your passport expires within 6 months. 😕
Family movie night – watched Ferdinand. 🎬 Good movie, but upon learning what bullfighting is the kids thought that was crazy.

It’s snowing!? 🌨😧
This picture captures most of what I’ll remember from yesterday’s Minnesota United game. 🤬⚽️
We had a great time at the Minnesota Zoo Jack-o-Lantern Spectacular last night. I was blown away by the artistry and overall experience. It is created by Passion for Pumpkins with 5,000 pumpkins! The big, photo style pumpkins are very cool. 🎃👍🤩
Today’s #MNUFC match wasn’t the one I would have picked to be the last of the season for me, but so be it. Looking forward to seeing everyone at the new stadium next year! ⚽️

We need a movement to ban cable news from common waiting areas. 🚫
Was looking like the Vikings might tie that game up, then a fumble. Ugh. 🏈
Two of my three Macs are upgraded to macOS Mojave. The last one that is still upgrading is an iMac with Fusion drive and is taking a lot longer than the others. I suspect some APFS twiddling. My ancient MacBook Pro 15” Retina from 2012 upgraded fine.
Power just got restored at our cabin on Cannon Lake after Thursday nights huge storm. Was out from Thursday at 6:32p to Sunday at 5:28p, at total of 71 hours. That is a long time, but given the severity of storms it’s impressive work from XcelEnergy.
Fountain in the Lyndale Park Rose Garden. The iPhone XS camera is very impressive.
I had my 200mm lens for the kids soccer games and there were a bunch of planes landing with a clear blue sky. 🛬📷

Only a few minutes into the “post home button” iOS experience and I can already see that the gesture interface is going to significantly increase my use of fast app switching.
Really enjoyed Hearts Beat Loud. Nice story, good music. 🎬
It seems that the nVidia GPU in my 2012 MacBook Pro 15” Retina is failing fast. Screen goes black, Kernel panic reported from GPU. Somewhat common issue with that laptop. I was planning to upgrade but was hoping to make it to October’s new machines!

A few days ago my dog Chase injured his CCL (Dog version of ACL) in his right hind leg. Today he injured the other one and is unable to walk. He’s older and also has melanoma, so surgery isn’t an option. Hoping he gets mobility back in a few days. 🤞🏻😢

The new capabilities of OmniFocus 3 are great, but I will be happy to get it on macOS so I can take full advantage of them. Having perspectives and tags so different across the platforms limits how I can modify my workflows.
Plugged my Jawbone Jambox into my laptop to change the configuration and found out that Jawbone went out of business. Since their configuration app was web based, it looks like I’m sticking with the config I have — forever! 😕

Learned the hard way that if you are using ZURB Foundation for Email, you really need to use their CSS Inlining tool. Did that, and it was like magic. MailChimp’s inliner didn’t get it right.

It seems bananas that there is a Banana Saver product one can buy. 🤦🏼♂️
Gooseberry Falls was amazing today.
Why does Microsoft OneDrive for iOS still not support the Files app. It should have been one of the first to adopt it. 🤨
When Twitter updates Terms of Service I get notices for multiple accounts that I deactivated/deleted a long time ago. Do others get this? Shouldn’t the accounts be deleted and no notice given?
North Shore requires a stop at Betty’s Pies. I’m a pie traditionalist. Blueberry, cup of coffee.
Snow hanging on up north.
Gooseberry Falls is roaring with spring melt.

Snow day seems like a good day to get the Z-Scale train out.
Cleared three neighbors driveways out with my snowblower. Building karma points today. 👍🏻
With all the amazing capabilities of the iPhone camera system, it still can’t expose snow properly. I have to up the exposure on all of them. Perhaps Apple needs some camera engineers that don’t live in California.
Well over a foot of snow to deal this morning. Heavy too with the warm temperatures recently. Had to go at the slowest speed.
Planning to just let the snow keep falling, and get completely snowed in until tomorrow morning, then I’ll get the snowblower out. Seems like time for family movie night! 🍿

Dan Wilson’s 3-Ring Binder all request show last night at Icehouse was fabulous. Small venue, and all songs performed solo on either piano or guitar. He encouraged the crowd to sing along on some of the favorites. The song selection process was chaos, but he made that fun too. A very unique show, that I’m glad I got to be part of. 🎶
Dan Wilson all-request on piano. 🎹

macOS Photos app grinds my laptop to a crawl. Fans blaring, everything sluggish. Very frustrating. Seemingly doing nothing and it’s taking 280% and more of CPU.
We made 34,344 meals, enough to feed 94 kids for a year!

I love these photos of Tammy and I from our annual SPS Commerce Social! 😊
Went down a rabbit hole 🕳 automating MailChimp for my Weekly Thing newsletter. Wrestled control on my template.
At times while trying to quiet my mind, it is like thoughts are bouncing around like a popcorn maker with kernels popping all over. Then I realize it helps to consider thoughts through that lens, and it helps quiet the mind.
Beef tenderloin into the Sous Vides bath. 🤤🥩
I guess I exceeded the temperature for the spatula. 🤨

A lot of snow coming down in Minneapolis! ❄️
The Vikings didn’t play well tonight, but this game is just hard to watch. 🏈☹️
I can’t think of a reason I would ever want a notification from my Kindle app.
"done in 60.411 seconds" has me despising Jekyll.
One of my favorite Saturday morning spots to do some reading.
Gas pumps with screens blaring advertising should be required by law to have always present off buttons.

Leveling up my coffee fussiness with this new coffee distribution tool. ☕️
Tyler and I played Super Mario Odyssey through a few levels today and had a blast. The game is filled with little hidden gems. And playing as other characters with the hat is amazing. 👍🏻💯
First time playing Ticket to Ride: Nordic Countries and liked it a lot. Limiting to only have 3 players, but fun routes and tunnels add challenges. Pairs well with snow and hot cocoa. 😊
Watched Hacksaw Ridge tonight. Very well done. Battle scenes were a bit much. Tammy and I have now watched all the 2017 Best Picture nominees.
Static site generators are great in so many ways, but the friction in publishing with them is horrible.
I want to be an energy efficient household but this monthly report from XcelEnergy does nothing to help me. Just makes me feel bad. Showing min/max/avg by day and hour would at least give some data to work with.
… NAS issue resolved? After extended SMART test said all was fine I did another rebuild of the Volume and after 14 hours it succeeded. 🤷♂️
Watched The Circle. Thought provoking ideas and concepts. Okay movie.
I got an Anki Cozmo robot for Christmas and we’ve been having a lot of fun with it. Little thing has a lot of character.
We are going to bring in the new year… frozen!
Tyler and I did this LEGO Technic RC Tracked Racer. Very fun! One of the most impressive LEGO kits we’ve done.

Nice gentle snow for Christmas Eve this afternoon. 🌨
Been getting errors on disk 3 in one of my Synology DS416 units. Swapped out the bad disk and started volume repair. Now seeing errors on disk 2 and failing volume repair. Uh oh. 😳 Luckily this data is all mirrored.
You remove all the social apps from your iPhone and you realize it wont fill all your idle moments. At first this makes you angry — entertain me! Then you realize idle moments are good. Life happens in those idle moments too.
Another super fun R/W Book Club meeting tonight! Good conversation about Daemon by Daniel Suarez.
Looking up recipes for Christmas, proud Minnesotan moment with this intro on Wikipedia: “Glorified rice is a dessert salad served in Minnesota and other states in the Upper Midwest.” You betcha…
Saw Star Wars: The Last Jedi and thought it was great! 👍
😤 … when you sit down to do something quick on your computer and you spend 30 mins fixing cable modem issues.
Trying to figure out what size rubber grommet I need for my espresso knock box bar. A bit bewildering. 🧐
Think I might have finally fixed a really annoying Time Machine v. Synology NAS behavior. 🤞
I 💙 this! #TeamSPS slide to highlight my disdain for pie charts. 😁 The exploded slices are a great touch! I’ll stick to pie you eat, thanks. 🥧
Tammy and I went to see Lady Bird last night. It was really good and I liked it a lot, despite my bias against coming of age stories.

Espresso shower head and gasket certainly needed replacing.
Watching the AWS re:Invent day 2 keynote and I keep noting that the they spend a lot of time talking and describing a problem, and then much less time talking about how the problem is solved. Should flip that around to focus on the solution.
AWS Cloud 9 IDE is a pretty interesting announcement. Pushes AWS into some of the space that Azure does well at.
You can import and export 1Blocker packages. I put my custom packages on GitHub so I can version them and share with others. 👍
In our chat room today TeamSPS decided I needed some Christmas cheer! 🎄 😎
I finally got my first house in SleepTown. Interesting app concept from the makers of Forest. Every house represents my persistence to achieve my sleeping goal!
I wish 1Blocker had a built in system for sharing and subscribing to custom packages made by other users. Similar to Workflow and TextExpander. I know there would be packages I would want to subscribe and share.
I’m still new to my Audible subscription but am liking it thus far. Think it will result in listening to more books. 📚
Thanks to @jbwhaley I have a nice little Python script so I can easily update micro.blog without getting distracted. Now to wire it into LaunchBar!
Looking forward to speaking at the MHTA Annual CIO Panel next week!
2h 46m AWS Keynote. Too long.
New AWS Transcribe should enable some nice speech-to-text features in various applications.
AWS DeepLens looks like a solution looking for a problem. Cool tech, don’t need it at all.
AWS SageMaker has promise to bring machine learning to complex problems faster and cheaper.
AWS S3 Select sounds very cool.
The house band idea during the AWS re:invent keynote seems really odd. Skip…
AWS Neptune has some promise to make graph databases more reliable and usable for applications.
Multi-master multi-region Aurora sounds great.
The new AWS EC2 Bare Metal Instance seems like an RFP checkbox requirement. Or very rare edge case need.
AWS ECS for Kubernetes announcement makes total sense. Expected and good to see them adopting this.

Realized today that the group gasket and shower screen on my espresso machine is supposed to be replaced every year. I guess 10 times that long isn’t too bad. 😬 Replacements on the way!
