Tammy and I hopped in the car for Lebanon Hills this afternoon to get out in the woods and hike a bit. Tammy always finds it a touch annoying that I want to have a route planned out and know what trails we are taking. She would rather just start walking and see where the path takes us. Today, we did it her way and just started walking. Turn left here, right there.

\n

About 3 miles in I wasn’t really sure which way we were going and I will admit that I tried to make extra long glances at the trail maps as we passed them. But I stayed true to the task and just followed wherever Tammy was leading us. The trails seemed familiar.

\n

After a while we got on some trails that we both thought we had never been on. There was also long stretches with no intersecting trails which isn’t common in Lebanon Hills. After what seemed like a mile we saw a parking lot and another trail map, but it wasn’t our parking lot.

Somehow with our random turns we had navigated ourselves to the completely opposite side of the park at a different parking lot. We were 4.5 miles in and I admit to considering for a moment getting a Lyft to take us to our car, but it was a nice day and off we went to return to the other side of the park.

We had a great hike on the Oberg Mountain Loop. This is Tammy’s sister’s favorite fall hike and it was our first time doing it. I can see why it is so highly recommended. Sadly the Maple’s had nearly all lost their leaves but the Birch were still doing their thing. Highly recommended!

Way back in the day I loved Geocaching. It was so much fun, particularly before it got commercialized. It was a way of exploring the area around you and finding cool, hidden things. 🗺️

When I first found POAPs the capability to claim a POAP for a location was something I wanted right away, and now you can with location drops! I created my very first location POAP and even recorded a video claiming it. Awesome. I wanted to make something with this. 🤔

\n

Then I connected the dots between the 612 Series NFTs which I have a complete collection of. You may remember I also interviewed Erik Halaas who created it. This was perfect – peanut butter and chocolate moment! ✨

\n

Thus the 612 POAP Challenge was created! 😲

\n

If you live in Minneapolis join in and go collect some of these locations. The event runs until Labor Day. I think this will be a fun summer activity! Get the whole family involved on some walks, bike rides, kayaks, and explore the city. I collected my first one this morning! 🧭

I love that I was able to create an entire activity on the POAP platform. 🤩

We had a fun afternoon with Crysten’s AMI exploring the bay side of Anna Maria Island with our guide Jeremy. We snorkeled on a sand bar in the middle of the bay finding sand dollars, crabs, and shells. Then found two groups of manatee as well as dolphins getting dinner.

I had a lot of fun out ice fishing for the first time tonight. Andy invited Liam, Mike, and I out to his ice house in Piersons Lake for the evening. Mike had also not been ice fishing and living in Texas it was all a new experience. To make sure we got the full experience Andy had us auger holes, just for fun though. I had no idea that ice fishing could involve all this gear. We were fishing by sonar watching our jig float in the water and seeing fish as they came by. Everyone caught some! 🎣🧊

We thought it was going to be very cold and rainy but the rain held off and the day turned incredibly nice for us to hike up to the Fifth Falls at Gooseberry Falls today. Gooseberry has to be one of the most accessible parks we have and it is a great place to explore!

The Singing Sakatah Hills State Trail is closed right by Highway 60 and Dalton Ave near Cannon Lake. They have a section fenced off where the trail edge has collapsed. The record rains must have been too much for this area. Couple of trees down too.

It was a nice hot day to enjoy a float down Minnehaha Creek today. Tiffany and Andrew were visiting so we got the tubes inflated, drove to Utley Park in Edina to put in and floated right back to our house taking out in Minnehaha Creek Park. This was the furthest we’ve gone on the tubes going 3.7 miles and took just over 2 hours. 💦

At Canoe Bay there are very friendly deer all over the property. They run around and seem to have a delightful time frolicking in the woods. They wont let you get too close but they also don’t run away when you approach.

With Cannon Lake flooded I had repositioned one of the UniFi G4 Instant cameras so it was pointing right at the boat.

I’ve also been battling with raccoons at our place. This summer I had 6 of them trapped and taken away. But there are still more.

And on the very first night of having this camera in position the raccoons decided to play with it.

\n

\n

Thankfully later in the day the lawn care folks showed up and amazingly one of them put the camera back in place for me. Thank you! We’ll see if the raccoons leave it alone.

On our way from Ballyshannon to Belfast we took a big detour so we could go see Giants Causeway. We had seen this kind of columnar geology before in Iceland, but it wasn’t as accessible and right along the sea like this. In the morning we took a boat tour to see Sliabh League from the water. We also wanted to see it from the surface on top as well. We made our way to the upper parking area for Sliabh League and then set out on foot to walk up to the viewing point at the top. It was a wonderful walk up. We got to the viewing platform and took it in for a while and then to Jamie’s chagrin Mazie decided to go up to the next point in the trail. Tammy and Tyler stayed back mostly to hang out with me while we waited for her return.

These spots are incredible and are over three times higher than what we saw at the Cliffs of Moher. However, the Cliffs of Moher at least appear to be more sheer in their drops. Sliabh League looks more mountainous with plenty of vertical drops as well.

If I was living hundreds of years ago I would like to have been a person that hunted with a hawk.

On our way to Ballyshannon we stopped at Ashford Castle to experience a Hawk Walk. After completely missing the car park on the first round through we found ourselves back outside the castle grounds getting more thorough directions from the gatekeeper who found us quite amusing. The second time through the gorgeous estate we found it. The castle and estate were amazing on their own. The Guinness family owned it at one point.

\n

We made our way on a nice 10 minute walk through the grounds to the Ireland School of Falconry and started our Hawk Walk with a tour of the facility and seeing some of the 32 hawks that they have there. The Harris Hawks that we would walk with are unique in that they hunt like a pack. They work cooperatively.

\n

We all took turns with Mazie and Tyler starting out with the hawks. We took Walnut and Chestnut out for the walk. The hawks came to the glove quick and obviously knew that the morsels of rat were waiting for them.

\n

We went out on the walk and it was incredible to have these hawks pacing along with us as we went. Anytime you raised the glove they would immediately come. We would then launch them off again and they would fly away. In between they would survey the area and swoop in around us joining along on the walk. Their speed was amazing. They can routinely go 60 miles an hour.

\n

An amazing experience made even more incredible with Ashford Castle as the backdrop. Photos don’t capture this experience that well but the videos really do. The power and grace when the hawk lands on the glove was inspiring.

I was pretty anxious about today. Today was the day that we did the hike along the Cliffs of Moher.

First of all, I’m fairly scared of heights. Going to the top of tall buildings is not something I look forward to. Being on very tall things with a lot of wind makes me just more uncomfortable. And then you add people that I love to the mix and I’m just a ball of nerves. We did a cliff walk in Ballybunion and that got me spooked a bit and I knew that was beginner level for the heights that we would get on the Cliffs of Moher.

\n

The plus was that we were going with Pat Sweeney of Doolin Cliff Walks. Pat has grown up in this area and he was instrumental in this cliff walk even coming about. He worked with all the farmers that own the land along the way to get hiking routes through and make this a reality for the last 14 years. Pat was calm and confident, but also realistic. He stopped a couple of times along the first half of the hike to remind us of safety and being careful. He shared that accidents do happen on the cliffs. Every year there are people that fall off. Some for doing things that they really shouldn’t be doing. Others because an accident happens. At one of the stops he shared that just four weeks prior a college girl traveling with three friends fell off the cliff. There was flooding on the trail. So they got on the grass edge to avoid the water, which was probably fine. But then there was an oncoming group and she stepped aside to let them go through and lost her footing.

\n

In fairness I know people fall into the Grand Canyon every year and you should always be aware and cautious in places like this. So, that is what I focused on. That and keeping myself firmly in the right place on the trail. The kids were kind to me and realized I was anxious and they did a great job. Tammy was helpful too. In the end, we did it and it was an incredible day with amazing views. All while sometimes just a few feet away from a 600 foot drop. 😬

\n

The walk started very close to the cottage that we are staying in, just down the road. The first stop was to take a moment to take in the area and see Doonagore Castle and appreciate the stone bridge we were walking over that was over 300 years old. The cottage that we are staying in is actually connected with Doonagore Castle and only became an Airbnb recently.

We passed through and along many farms as we went along the coast.

After rising about 150 feet above the ocean the views become more stunning.

There were some stones laid as bridges across streams. Pat commented that this particular stone crossing had been washed out twice by the ocean in the last 10 years.

We took the ferry to Inis Mór to explore the island today. We rented e-bikes from Aran Bike Rental and took off from the port to check things out. We took the more casual green route for our riding.

Our first stop was at the Seal Colony. There were a few seals out relaxing on the rocks.

After that there was this unofficial stop where there were a bunch of cairns that people had created — including one giant one.

We took the bikes as far as we could and parked them at visitor center for Dún Aonghasa. After purchasing a family pass we hiked up to the ruins.

After getting our fill we hiked down and shopped at Aran Sweater Market. Mazie, Tammy, Jamie got sweaters and Jamie got a hat.

Got crêpes from food trailer. Delicious. We then decided to take off and retrieve bikes from bike park and Jamie dropped his bike with the chain dropping off the front gear. This took us a while to get remedied since the chain and gearing was in a fender and the cogs were very worn down. Eventually Jamie got it on and then had to wash the grease off of his hands for a very long time.

After resolving the chain issue we rode up the island to the Seven Churches.

Ride back down to the Kilmurvey Beach for a very brief stop for Mazie to run in the sand.

Somewhat quickly ride back to get to Joe Watty’s Bar & Restaurant for Jamie to have a pub lunch. Beef stew and a half-pint of Guinness hit the spot!

We had an amazing time hiking the Gap of Dunloe today. We started at Lord Brandon’s Cottage and hiked up the steeper side. The first mile or two were pretty easy. Then the road tipped up as we went to the top. You walk the whole way on the road so it is easy stepping just a steady climb. You also need to watch out for cars, bicycles, and the horse-drawn jaunting cars. Plenty of sweating on the way up.

When we got to the top we took a family selfie holding on to the high point marker as the wind blasted us from the other side. I don’t know how strong the winds were but you could lean into them quite a bit. That wind persisted most of the way as we gradually dropped back down and finished the hike at 7.00 miles exactly at Kate Kearney’s Cottage.

When Tammy’s Dad passed away one of the organizations that he supported was the Bee Lab at the University of Minnesota. As a thank you from the Bee Lab Tammy and I were able to visit today, meet Dr. Marla Spivak, and get a tour of the facility.

Today’s hike left right from the front steps of the Hotel Edelweiss and walked out of Sils Maria to a ascent above the tree line. The ascent was a bit more gradual which I was very appreciated of. We had a great time experiencing Grevasalvas on the trail, a wonderful rest at the top, and a nice hike back along the lack. A bit over 9.5 miles today.

On our hike today we passed through the incredibly picturesque little village of of Grevasalvas. This little collection of houses was used for the production of “Heidi”. It was like stepping backwards in time. Such a cool place to visit.

Every town in the Engadine Valley has multiple water fountains that have the most delicious and pure drinking water just flowing out of them constantly. It is amazing to be able to get fresh delicious water. It is also very cold. We saw some others dipping their feet in this freezing water and thought we would try it as well. It was amazing. It is painful to submerge them, but it made our tired feet feel so much better nearly instantly after hiking so long.

After getting to Chamonna Tuoi I decided to take one of these mountain grade scooters back down. It was awesome! It took a bit for me to get comfortable on it. The shocks and disc brakes are a must since you brake nearly the whole way down. I got down in 32 mins!

Day 2 of our Engadine Hiking adventure and today we hiked up the valley toward Piz Buin ending at Chamonna Tuoi for a delicious lunch of rösti and grilled cheese. The day started with a serious uphill section right away, climbing about 1,600 feet over the first 90 minutes. We stayed at a steady elevation with a little descent, and then finished with a more gradual ascent up to the hut. This route was totally new, and part of the trip spending two nights in Guarda.

We got into Guarda this afternoon just before 4pm. We made our way through the town to the Messier Lodge and unlacing the hiking boots felt so unbelievably good. We hiked 10.7 miles over 5h 25m. It was a long day and the last couple of miles my feet and legs were feeling it. It was a great accomplishment and I’m going to rest the legs and body for tomorrow!

In just over a week we head to Switzerland for our hiking trip. I wanted to get a longer and harder hike in before we left so this morning Tammy and I got up early, let the kids sleep in, and went to Murphy-Hanrehan Park Reserve for a 5.3 mile hike with about 900 ft of elevation gain. It took us 2h 8m to finish. My shirt was like I had wore it in a shower when we got done. I brought my poles and was initially feeling silly, but after a couple of miles the trail started going up and down more and I was happy to have them. 😅 Also on Strava.

We had a fun weekend at Family Space Camp! 🚀 Our program included runs in the Multi Axis Trainer, the 5D weightlessness trainer. We ran an entire simulation of a Space Shuttle mission where Tyler was EECOM, Mazie PAYCOM, Tammy CAPCOM, and I was FDO. I got to do the countdown to launch. 🤩 We got to see an incredibly impressive planetarium showing as well as a great IMAX experience on the International Space Station. We also learned a bunch about NASA’s Artemis program. And the whole time we got to see a real Saturn V and Saturn IB rocket, as well as a capsule that went into space and a moon rock. And we got great astronaut suits.

It was 2009 when I first went dogsledding at Wintergreen! That trip was just me, and it was Layne Kennedy’s photography workshop. It was an amazing 3-days of dogsledding and I got three awesome friends out of it as well!

So it was great to come back 13 years later, this time with the whole family, and have a fun half-day dogsledding trip with Wintergreen Dogsled Lodge outside of Ely.

The dogs were just as I remembered them — so excited to pull and really loud when they had to be stopped. The dogs seemed friendlier than I remembered from the first time. We got a plenty cold day with temperatures around -4 F°. Everyone had a good time on the snow!

We had a fabulous day on the trails with snowmobiles! We got to Lake Vermillion Houseboats right at 9a to get our snowmobiles and helmets. We were on the trail in no time. We hadn’t had breakfast so we stopped in Tower after a short ride across Pike Bay at Good Ol’ Days Cafe for a “greasy spoon” breakfast. It also served as a quick gear test and we realized the folks were going to need some help with warm hands. We picked up a bunch of hand warmers at the gas station and then we hit the trail for pretty good loop.

I’m not sure on the total distance but we were out on the trail for a bit over 3 hours after breakfast. The hand warmers were a big help and we had a great time. I thought the distance was just right but mostly everyone else thought we could have ended an hour earlier. 🙂 I also wasn’t that cold when we got done and everyone else felt pretty cold. 🥶

This morning we drove from St. Johnsbury over to New Hampshire for the day. Our first event of the day was an amazing 2+ mile hike to see the Flume Gorge. Due to COVID-19 they were requiring tickets and timed entries. When we got there people were actually queued up to get in which seemed surprising to me. As we made our way up the gorge I realized why this was such a popular hike. The route was stunning, which immaculate paths and great wooden staircases going right up inside the gorge itself! I kept wondering what this must be like in the Spring when so much more water must be going down it.

I have had a growing interest in the Appalachian Trail ever since I read Bill Bryson’s A Walk in the Woods. So it was a special treat when we were driving back down Bromley Mountain and there was a parking area that connected directly to the Appalachian Trail.

In my head Alpine Slides look dangerous. There is no good reason for that. Visually they look like a luge track and it makes me think of people on bobsleds going at insane speeds. Now having done it, this analogy seems utterly ridiculous, but that is what was in my head. When Tammy put the Alpine Slides at Bromley Mountain on our plan for the day I was anxious.

Mazie, Tyler and I were all first timers on the Alpine Slide. Shortly after getting going I realized this was all just a bunch of fun. The slide was very long and had a ton of fun turns. As a bonus, the chair lift ride up was gorgeous as well. Mazie had a blast and would have gone a dozen more times. Tyler got into the groove of it after a while too.

My brother Isaiah and his family were visiting this weekend and we drove to Wabasha for the Flooded Forest Kayak Tour with Broken Paddle Guiding.

Everyone else had nice Solara 135 kayaks and Tyler and I joined up in a Solara 145T Tandem. I enjoyed the kayak. It was one of the most stable kayaks I have been on. There were about 15 people in total on the tour and there were a lot of guides to cover everyone. We took a bike trip a number of years ago with Broken Paddle and we’ve had nothing but amazing experiences with them. If you are looking for a fun day or weekend trip I would strongly recommend them.

I’ve been fighting a Pileated Woodpecker, and losing. This woodpecker has been visiting our house every morning. It usually shows up between 7-9am. It is the biggest woodpecker I’ve ever seen, and it’s done a number.

Today was our final day for hiking in Arizona and we decided to end with the big one, Camelback Mountain! The Cholla Trail is closed right now, so it was easy to pick the Echo Canyon Trail. This was the hardest hike I’ve ever done by a pretty big margin. In fact, both Tammy and I felt most of the hike was really more of a scramble over boulders. We took a steady pace up. Tammy would get ahead of me and wait for me to catch up. The hike up took 73 minutes, ascending 1,317 feet over 1.37 miles.

I always feel like going down on steep trails is harder than going up, but for Camelback you are going down such a steep rate that it is more like climbing down rocks so you are using your hands to brace. I found going down easier than I expected. I did slip on loose gravel at one point and fell down. I was fine, but it was cool to see my Apple Watch accurately detect the fall. It took me 68 minutes to descend.

Every Wednesday that we have been in Arizona, Tammy has been able to meet up with her Mom and hike Pinnacle Peak. Most of the time Mazie has been able to join her, but I was working so I couldn’t join. This week I’m on vacation and Tammy and I got to hike it together. It is a great route and the trail was impeccably maintained. They even have volunteers that are there to call for help if anyone needs it.

Tammy and I hiked from the trailhead to the end which was 2 miles. We went all the way to the end and touched the gate at marker 101. 436 feet of climbing that way. On the way back Tammy and I went at our own pace, and we both decided to push it.

She quickly left me in the dust. On the way back, the trail immediately climbs steadily for a half-mile and I was “redlined” at 170+ bpm the entire way up. You also get to climb more on the way back with 732 feet of elevation in the 2 mile return route. It turns out the end of the trail is about 300 feet lower than the trailhead!

This morning Tammy and I hiked the Infinity Loop trail in Dreamy Draw. We were looking for a longer hike without much elevation today, so this 5 mile loop with just 500 feet of elevation worked well. Plus, we got to make an Infinity Loop ♾ with our tracks!

We visited Lost Dutchman State Park and hiked the Treasure Loop Trail. There is a story hear about a lost mine that brings some intrigue to the Superstition Mountains. There are even some documentaries about it. We did a good 2.5 mile hike with 480 feet of elevation. It was a warmer day, Sunny at 80 °F which seemed to hit Tyler and I the most.

We had a great hike on the Broken Arrow trail in Sedona today. We were a little hesitant since some folks online had commented that there were a lot of Pink Jeep Tours on this trail. I don’t think they must have hiked very far because it doesn’t take that long to get to the point where no vehicles are allowed.

We would have hiked much more, but we had to turn back due to time. We did a total of 1.4 miles out and back with very little elevation. It was a great trail and very scenic. We will take this all the way to Chicken Point the next time we are here.

We took a weekend getaway to Flagstaff, AZ and today we visited the Grand Canyon. It was Tyler’s first time here, Mazie’s second but the first she will remember, and my 3rd time and Tammy’s 4th or 5th. We hadn’t been here in the winter before and I can report that the Grand Canyon is cold in February. There was a dusting of snow around that made the place even more scenic.

We only had the day so we spent a few hours on the South Rim and visited the Visitor Center, the Village and drove along the rim and took photos from various places. We did the Trail of Time hike, or walk, along the rim.

As always the Grand Canyon is spectacular and an amazing natural wonder. Tammy and I agreed that the next time we come it is going to be with a permit to go down to the bottom of the canyon and spend a night or two there.

This morning we drove to Cave Creek Regional Park to go for a hike. It was about 40 minutes from where we are staying but well worth the drive. We did a loop heading out on Go John Trail, then to Quartz Trail, and then back on Slate Trail. We hiked 3.5 miles, gaining 425 feet, and took a total of 1h 22m.

It was a really nice hike with great views. There were gentle climbs up but overall it was a nice trail that wasn’t overly difficult.

We also added an extra mile of hiking before this hike because we took off down this trail, and didn’t notice the “North” part. After going a half mile we turned around and started over on the right trail. Ooops!

We hiked up the Wind Cave trail this morning and had a great time. Tammy declared it perhaps her favorite hike ever. It was 1.7 miles with 800 feet of elevation on the way up. It took us just short of an hour.

Today we got up early and were on the trail at 8am to hike to the top of Ryan Mountain in Joshua Tree National Park.

We hit the trail and were thinking it would be warming up so we had shorts and just shirts on. Immediately we saw people with snowjackets, hats, gloves. I’m not sure who was dressed right, but one of us picked wrong. It was mostly us.

The way up was a 1,000 foot ascent that was pretty much non-stop. It was strenuous but that also made it a great accomplishment when we got to the top!

Today we visited Coon Bluff Recreation Area to see the Salt River wild horses. The non-profit Salt River Wild Horse Management group helps provide for these wild horses, and they are currently putting out hay for them each day. You can visit while they do this and walk among these wild horses but you need to be slow and calm, and keep your distance. The horses themselves were skirmishing a bit. It gets your attention when twenty horses start stirring and running around you. I brought the good camera with a long lens to catch some photos of these beautiful horses.

We visited Saguaro National Park today. We didn’t have a ton of time so we only (and accidentally actually) went to the East park. We did a quick hike but it was our second hike of the day so we didn’t go too far. It looked like an incredible set of trails for hiking and the loop road was very popular with cyclists.

We visited the Sabino Canyon Recreation Area today on our day trip to Tucson. We took the shuttle to the top of the trail and then made our way down stopping at several locations. It was a very pretty walk and fun to see the spring creek with running water down the canyon. We had to cross it barefoot and the water was very cold!

We visited the Boyce Thompson Arboretum today and had a great time walking the loop around the arboretum. On the way back we went up on the hillside and hiked on the upper trail. It was a gorgeous visit with an incredible variety of things to see.

Today I learned that these cactus are incredibly sharp. The needles will go right through light hiking shoes. Ouch. They are very pretty though, particularly when the sun lights them up. ☀️🌵🥾

Tammy, Mazie and I were looking for a long hike today so we drove to Lebanon Hills Regional Park and hiked the Voyager Trek Loop for 5.4 miles. It was Lucky’s longest hike and she did great.

We take Lucky on a walk nearly every day and usually go through Pamela Park for a 1.2 to 1.6 mile loop. With the pandemic the ice rink and ponds have been very busy with lots of skaters. It makes the walk more fun to see people out and having fun. ⛸🏒
