We tried out Loon Liquor in Northfield today for lunch. The pizza was really good and the distillery was really great to hang out in. If you are in Northfield give this place a go. They mill their own flour!

The whiskey smooth. Straight from County Cork. Even the bottle is cool. This may ruin me from regular Bailey’s.

We joined thousands of our best friends on the Guinness Storehouse visit today. As a fan of Guinness this was a Father’s Day highlight for me. It was not a brewery tour, but instead more of a history of Guinness itself. I liked seeing some of the archive of advertisements over the years. And we got to get a “Stoutie”, a selfie printed into the head of the Guinness. We finished with lunch at 1837 Bar & Brasserie and my favorite beef stew of the trip. Awesome.

Today’s Guinness isn’t a Guinness, but instead an O’Hara’s Irish Stout Nitro.
My Barber sent me to McMunn’s in Ballybunion

We ended our evening at McMunn’s of Ballybunion on the recommendation of my barber. How is that? 💈

Before leaving for vacation I made a stop at Dick’s Sports Barbers and got my regular 3 week cut from Gene. Gene’s been cutting my hair for a decade. I sat down for a trim and shared we were going to Ireland for vacation. After a bit Gene mentioned that if we ended up in Ballybunion I should go to McMunn’s. I knew Ballybunion was already on our itinerary. “We will for sure be there!”

It turns out that Tony McMunn is an “Edina guy” as Gene put it — a successful business guy and he owns McMunn’s in Ballybunion. Tony got his hair cut at Dick’s Barbers for many years. Dick, the owner, and Gene, both use to cut his hair. Gene said he was a nice guy and now lives in Florida but he still owns this pub in Ballybunion.

So tonight we stopped in for a pint of Guinness and desert for the family. When checking out I asked the waitress if she knew Tony McMunn and she did. I shared the connection and all had a laugh.

I grabbed a few McMunn’s golf tees to bring back to Gene at Dick’s Barbers. ⛳️

I’m two weeks into no coffee and this morning I thought I would try a mug of Pu’er Black Tea fully aware that it has caffeine but maybe not too much? I’m surprised by how noticeable the caffeine “surge” felt as I drank it with no caffeine in my system.

Tammy and I had a delicious lunch today at Chelsea’s Kitchen! We started with Prickly Pear Margaritas, one of our favorites. The New Mexico Hatch Chili Queso let the Hatch Chili’s shine. The Green Chile Cornbread was delicious with a touch of heat and sweetness. We finished with the LGO Reserve Short Rib Tacos. Thanks to my brother Isaiah and his wife Tiffany for the recommendation!

Time for a cocktail. Old Fashioned 🥃🍊🍒

If you are wondering about the Maple Syrup, I use that instead of Simple Syrup. Tammy suggested it and I really enjoy the flavor it brings to the drink. Obviously only real Maple Syrup.

We went to Ursa Minor Brewing to get pizza and a drink. I had the delicious Blackberry Shenanigans sour. The pizza was very good too! Happy to have fires to keep warm while we waited outside. 🍕🍻🍬

Cocktail Emoji Triples

I was texting recently and wanted to reference an Old Fashioned and it dawned on me that there was a perfect emoji reference for that drink!

Old Fashioned

🥃🍊🍒

It captures the bourbon, and then the two dominate flavors of orange and cherry.

Could Emoji Triples be used to describe any cocktail? So I took a run at some.

Gin & Tonic

🍹🍋🏖

Nice drink. Lemons, and something you might drink on a beach.

Mojito

🍹🥥🍍

This is definitely an umbrella drink. Coconut implies sweetness. Pineapple?

Moscow Mule

🥃🐴🇷🇺

This one seemed harder. Copper mug? Cocktail tumbler. Mule? Bring on a horse. Moscow? Let’s use a Russian flag.

We were lucky enough to grab tickets right when they went on sale and it was a southwest tasting menu that looked absolutely delicious to us.

Travail did a very good job managing social distancing, keeping everything outside with fresh air, and making sure that people moved through promptly but not too fast. I love seeing that restaurants are figuring out how to adapt to the pandemic.

Made a short trip to Montgomery, MN tonight to get some delicious beer from Montgomery Brewing and great pizza to-go from Pizzeria 201. Eating on a blanket by the railroad tracks was an adventure though.

While in Saugatuck we went to Holland a couple of times, it’s just 10 miles or so up the road. We had dinner at New Holland Brewing and I got to do another beer flight. I skipped the Dragon’s Milk since I’ve had it and can get it easily enough at home.

The numbers start at the bottom (6 o’clock is 1) and go clockwise:

1.Monkey King Saison Farmhouse Ale
2. Imperial Hatter IPA
3. White Hatter Belgian-Style White Pale Ale
4. Mad Hatter IPA
5. Beerhive Tripel
6. Paleooza Michigan Pale Ale

I would happily have a full pint of any of them, they were all very good.

Saugatuck Brewing Sampler

More opportunities to try local beers at Saugatuck Brewing. I picked a bunch of hoppy brews. The serving method was a little odd, if you had a table with 4 of these it would be a bit unwieldy. Overall great beer but one stood well above for me.

Pathfinder Pale Ale: Light, refreshing. Good hops. Straightforward, solid beer.

Motueka’s Revenge: Good full body. Reminded me of Surly Furious, but less power on the hops. Like a 50% strength Furious.

Fortunate Events IPA: Bitter. Lots of bite. Not overly fruity.

Not Messing Around Double IPA: Holy cow! Oak! Bourbon! Very strong. Like drinking Jack Daniels. Not my thing, but I’m sure folks that like this would like it a lot.

Singapore IPA: Bitter. Not much body.

Continuum IPA: Delicious and packed with hops. Definitely my favorite of the group.

Unfortunately their website is completely down right now, and seems like it has been for a while, so no links for these beers

I got an email from Four Firkins at 10:13 am that they had received their very first limited shipment of Surly Hell. They were limiting sales to 2 4-packs per customer, and opening 2 hours earlier to accomodate. I immediately mobilized with my neighbor Mike and off we went. Got the last four 4-packs in the cooler. They sent an email at 11:47 am saying:

Ingredients

2 1/2 quarts of water

10 sticks of cinnamon

10 all spice berries

1/2 teaspoon whole cloves

2 1/2 cups sugar

1 1/2 gallons of apple cider

2 quarts of orange juice

1 cup of lemon juice

Directions

Bring water, sugar and spices to boil for 10 mins.

Let water mixture cool for 1 hour.

Add apple cider, orange juice and lemon juice.

I store it back in the gallon jugs I buy the apple cider in. The more times you reheat it, the better it seems to taste.
