We’re Getting a Dog!

with 13 comments

We’ve been thinking about getting a dog for awhile. We figured we would get one sometime after we had kids, since a dog does make travel a bit harder, and hey, so do kids so why not really make it hard! :-)

(She’s the one on the left in the 2nd picture, and the right in the 3rd picture.)

Mazie loves dogs. She likes cats as well, and enjoys attempting to smother Logan on a regular basis. Gypsie is more of a flight risk, and rarely does Mazie get to have her way with her. However, Mazie is a big fan of Rusty, Grandpa and Grandma’s dog, and Louie, Aunt Angie and Uncle Max’s dog.

I’ve never owned a dog but have flirted with the idea many times. Tammy’s folks have always had one. It’s a bit of a leap, but today we officially became dog owners (well, at least next Wednesday we will be).

Tammy has been scouting the adoption sites for a good pup. We wanted to adopt a dog, since there are so many (really, that many) dogs that need homes. She found a couple in recent weeks that she really liked but they were adopted instantly. Last night she found one online, made a long drive today to meet her and it was an instant match.

She’s a terrier-poodle cross. We’ll get her on Wednesday. I’m really excited, and need to learn a lot about dogs.

We need to figure out a name! We’ve got some ideas, but if you think of something that seems great give us your suggestion by commenting here!

  1. You could borrow from the show “Dead Like Me” and call her “JD” short for Just Dog.

  2. Cool, and it’s great that you adopted a mutt. There are a couple of reasons that adoption is good, you mention one, there are a lot of dogs that need an adoptive home, but also, I find that mutts are much better dogs than their purebred counterparts. I’d suggest obedience training for you and your new dog if you’ve never had a dog before… and remember, your dog wants you to be the boss, if it isn’t doing what you want it to, its about you, not about the dog.

OK, names… part terrier so this is probably going to be a pretty high energy hound.. how ’bout

    ‘Rascal’ or ‘Flash the Dog’

  5. Rusty thinks his new cousin should not end in an ie since Louie and Rusty are ‘ies’ and when all dogs are together they will get confused when calling for them. A dog learns their name buy how it ends.

Lou Lou is one idea. How about Peaches (because of her coloring)? Gi Gi because of the French Poddle in her. About D-Dee. Oliva? Sophie? Daisy? Flicka? Molly? Sadie? Magic? Princess? Zing? Lolly?

Rusty is excited about meeting his new cousin. She sure is cute.

  6. a couple of more Flower? Springer? (because you are getting her in the Spring and because she will like to run.)

Also Rusty would be happy to babysit ‘his’ cousin when his family travels.

  8. I’ve always wanted a dog like(named) Juno its a robot dog that was created by the Tamil science fiction author Sujatha (http://www.writersujatha.com/aboutus.html) long before Sony’s Aibo and the likes. Sujatha, is also an engineer & apparently the designer of the EVM (Electronic Voting Machine).

Juno is pretty smart, in fact smarter than all humans in the novel and gets the owner out of trouble quite a few times…

  9. Keeping with the L theme (lollipop) Lady, Lily, or the color of the dog theme Honey. I can only image you have all kinds of name suggestions by now.

  10. Oh My. First a robot and now a dog. Oh My.

What about calling the dog “The Blue Darter.” That would be cool. Or you could call him “Dammit.” As in, “Come here, Dammit.”

Sure, there are endless possibilities and I’m certainly just getting started. That being said, if you call your dog anything other than “Keekley” I will throw a galactic fit.

Keekley is a great dog name. It’s fun, it’s fresh, it’s mod. It does end in the ee sound, but Rusty could get used to that for such an prestigious name.

    Keekley. Seriously. Why not?

  11. Rusty and I are excited that there will now be a majority in the dog owner category for the Olson family! I am very excited for my new cousin! Right now, by best friend is a girl named Abby, so I know girls are all that bad. No matter what your name is, I know you will be happy to be part of the Thingelstad family.

I have some tips to help you out from things I’ve learned from my vists to your new family.

    1. Always offer to clean up the highchair after Mazie eats.
    2. DO NOT pee in the basement.
    3. The cats seem like they may be fun to play with, but I wouldn’t recommend it.
    4. It’s fun to follow Mazie around, and she likes to say your name a lot.
    5. Dogs are not allowed at big Olson family functions, but you can come along to smaller affairs.
