For a heavy data user the cost is actually not horrible. There is a 2-year contract minimum which is rough. You can get the cost breakdown at http://www.apple.com/iphone/easysetup/rateplans.html.

The phone itself is great — and features like visual voicemail are awesome. My biggest complaint would be ringer volume. I want it louder. The 1.0.1 software update fixed some issues in this area.

The software updates I expect will fix most of the issues over the next few months. Definitely expect some early adopter issues right now.

I’m giving some thought to picking one of these up. I haven’t done the full
investigation, I plan on reading your recommended sites. The question I have is
cost. I am assuming you have ATT/Cingular service? The only way I would sign
up for one is to have the browser and cool stuff but how much does it cost a
month? The phone itself also needs to work well, of course. I am assuming since
you didn’t write about the phone part it works well?
