The first time you see expert, you're like "whoa. No human can do that". I think I failed my first hard song in something like 17 seconds. And yet, when you get to the end of medium, or get stuck towards the end of expert, the next difficulty level is just enough harder than what you can do to make it interesting, and it introduces just the right number of new mechanics. I'm not a great game player - not even close, but I got to the point of being able to play GH1 on expert. And I wasn't playing obsessively or anything.
